Leitrim Ladies Notes:
[b]TG4 Connacht Championship Final:[/b]
After seven long years and contesting six finals Leitrim finally got back on top again when Ann Marie Cox lifted the Flanagan Oil Cup on behalf of her very proud teammates at 3.20pm on Sunday afternoon in McHale Park, Castlebar. To all outside the camp, no one could see past a Sligo win ? the form book could only have Sligo odds on to win. In May Leitrim played Sligo in the second round of the Championship and while Leitrim played well for 20 minutes, Sligo again dominated and ran out comfortable winners. But within the camp there was a quiet confidence and determination. A good win in the semi final against Galway four weeks ago helped repair the damage. The heart breaking National league defeat to Clare and the hurt of the past years could all be erased in 60 minutes but it would take all of the courage and determination that the girls could summon and how they did. Playing into a very difficult wind in the first half, Leitrim struck early but it was obvious that Sligo were not going to relinquish their title easily. Four points behind at the break was acceptable with the benefit of the wind in the secondhalf and the mood at half time was good. Things disimproved as Sligo went into a commanding six point lead as the half progressed. Then Leitrim found the courage to dig deeper and chip away at the Sligo lead. As the countdown clock ticked closer to 0.00 a goal would have to come Leitrim?s way to make that final push. A penalty decided it. Captain Ann Marie Cox stepped up and shouldered the responsibility with a brilliant effort. The sides were level and all to play for. Sligo went ahead again but Leitrim responded. Only minutes left and up stepped Sinead Quinn with a wonderful effort to put Leitrim ahead. Over a minute to go and Sligo had one more attack ? then a Scórable free was awarded. They decided to go for broke and looked for a goal for the win. The discipline and effort put into defending the goal was incredible and forced the Sligo attack into going for the draw but the pressure forced an eventual shot wide. Ten seconds on the clock and the subs were making their way down the steps towards the field ? the fulltime hooter went but no one heard it such was the noise of celebration. Management were still shouting instructions to the defence when they realised it was all over as the players fell to their knees in celebration. The tears flowed as they had for the past number of years but this time in celebration. A great result for a wonderful bunch of players who gave everything they had to secure the win. A special word of congratulations to the eleven players who did not get a chance to play on Sunday and who put in the same huge effort all year ? there would be no trophy without them. With a great reception in Cox?s of Dromod the team moved on to Carrick where the game was shown in Paddy?s Bar ? the celebrations lasted long into the night of a day to remember.
[b]Player of the Match:[/b]
There was a double celebration for Leitrim as the peerless Maeve Quinn was voted Player of the match. In a panel of many heroes, Maeve?s workrate all day epitomised the efforts of her team mates and a worthy winner of the award.
[b]Supporters:[/b]A special word of thanks to all of the supporters who came to support Leitrim on Sunday. Their very vocal support in the final quarter of the game was the sixteenth player for the Leitrim team and undoubtedly lifted the team over the winning line. More of the same in three weeks time would be very much appreciated. Thanks also to all the good luck messages and messages of congratulations sent to the team.
[b]All Ireland Quarter Finals:[/b]
The draw for the All Ireland quarter finals will take place live on TG4 at 5.00pm on Sunday from the Galway races. The winners from each province will play the losing quarter finalists from another province. Should Leitrim progress to the semi final, they are due to play the Ulster Champions if they are also successful in their quarter final match or whoever defeats them if they lose. With the Clare defeating Limerick in the Munster final on Sunday last, Leitrims potential opponents are Limerick, Longford or Wexford from Leinster or Cavan or Fermanagh from Ulster. Both Leinster and Ulster Finals are on next Sunday. The quarter finals will take place in three weeks on Sunday 20th August and the semi final on Saturday 9th September. Anyone interested in providing sponsorship towards the expenses of the quarter final game should contact Geraldine Cremer at 086 3290256.

The first club championship final of the year will be decided next weekend whenÓglencar Manor take on Ballinaglera in the Junior A final on Sunday evening at 7.45pm in Shane McGettigan Park, Drumshanbo.. Ballinaglera narrowly missed out on the title last year as they were defeated by the narrowest of margins to St Josephs in a thrilling encounter. Meanwhile Glencar Manor were blazing a trail in Junior B and recorded a comfortable title against Sean O?Heslins. Both teams have a number of experienced players to call on, as Ballinaglera?s Louise Loughlin will get a change from minding the Leitrim net to play a pivotal role outfield. She will be joined by excellent midfielder Ailish Curnyn while Tanya McPartland, Mairead McCawley, Katy Gallagher and Linda McGourty will all have an important role inÓgleras attempt to break through to senior ranks by lifting the title. Glencar Manor can also call on county players, Amanda Sweeney, Camilla McDonagh and Michelle McNulty and they will be ably assisted by players like Janette Maguire, Lauraine Walpole and Aisling Kerrigan
[b]Intermediate Championship:[/b]
The defining game of the Intermediate championship will take place on Saturday evening next when Mohill face Kiltubrid at 7.00pm in Fenagh with the winner qualifying to play Cloone in the Final. Also on Sunday, Bornacoola play Annaduff and Cloone play Aughawillan in the remaining round of fixtures.
[b]Change of Dates for Championship:[/b]
Due to the All Ireland quarter final on 20th August all games scheduled for that weekend have been refixed for 26th/27th August including the Intermediate Championship Final.
[b]Under 14 7 a Side Shield Final:[/b]
Congratulations to Aughawillan who made a great comeback in the second half to defeat Melvin Gaels by a single point in the final at a rain soaked Ballinaglera on Saurday afternoon. The final score was Aughawillan 2.07 Melvin Gaels 2.06.
[b]9 a Side Junior Final:[/b]
Congratulations to Sean O Heslins who defeated Fenagh in the final in Aughavas on Saturday evening. Full report next week.
[b]Minor Championship:[/b]
The championship has reached the semi final stages as St Josephs played Dromahair yesterday evening in the first semi final. The second semi final will be played next Tuesday evening. In the 9 a side competition, Aughawillan, Ballinaglera and Kiltubrid have qualified for the semi finals with the winners of the Sean O Heslins Allen Gaels game also played yesterday evening.
[b]Under 12 Championship.[/b]
The final of the Championship will be played this evening betweenÓglencar Manor and St Josephs in Ballinaglera at 7.00pm. In the 9 a side competition Fenagh and Gortlettragh have qualified for the final and will be played in 2 ? 3 weeks time. There are two rounds to be completed in the 7 a side competition.
[b]Under 16 Championship:[/b]
All entries are now due as the competitions commences on 24th August.
[b]Tommy Murphy Cup:[/b]
Congratulations to the mens team on an excellent win over holders Tipperary in the quarter final on Saturday. Its now August and two Leitrim teams are within a total of three games of playing in Croke Park – 2006 could yet be a year to remember.

Club FootballIn the event of equality of points, the following regulations will be used to determine which section of the division teams will play in for phase two of the competition:
1. [b]Two teams[/b] tied for [b]one remaining place[/b] in the top half: Teams play off to decide which team takes the higher place in the final league table.
2. [b]Three teams[/b] tied for [b]one remaining place[/b] in the top half: the team with the highest score difference should qualify for the play-off final, to play against the winner of a play-off involving the remaining two teams.
3. [b]Three teams[/b] tied for [b]two places[/b] in the top half: the team with the highest score difference should take the first automatic qualifying place and the remaining two teams play-off for the second place.
4. [b]Four teams[/b] tied for [b]one place[/b] in the top half: two play-off semi-finals and a play-off final to decide the one place available. The team with the highest score difference should play the team with the third highest score difference and the team with second highest and fourth highest score difference should meet in the respective semi-finals.
5. [b]Four teams[/b] tied for [b]two remaining places[/b] in the top half: the top team on score difference should take the first automatic qualifying place. The second placed team should receive a bye into a play-off final where it will meet the winner of a semi-final played between the remaining two teams, to decide the second qualifying team for the top half.
6. [b]Four teams[/b] tied for [b]three remaining places[/b] in the top half: the first two automatic places should go to the teams which have the best score difference. The two teams remaining will play-off for the remaining place in the top half.
7. [b]Five teams[/b] tied for [b]one remaining place[/b] in the top half: the team with the highest score difference should receive a bye to a play-off final. The next highest team on score difference should play the team with the third highest score difference in one semi-final and the teams with the second and fourth best score difference should play-off in a second semi-final. The winners of these semi-finals to play-off for the right to meet the team with the bye in a final game to decide the team to make the top half.

[b]Five teams[/b] tied for [b]two remaining places[/b] in the top half: the team with the highest score difference should take an automatic place in the top half, with the four remaining teams playing two semi-finals and a play-off final to decide the second qualifying place in the top half. Semi-final pairing decided as at (7) above.
9. [b]Five teams[/b] tied for [b]three places[/b] in the top half: the first two automatic places should go to the two teams with the best score difference. The team with the third best score difference receive a bye to the play-off final to meet the winners of a play-off semi-final between the two teams with the lowest score difference, to decide the remaining place available.
10. [b]Five teams[/b] tied for [b]four places[/b] in the top half: the first three automatic places should go to the teams with the best score difference with the fourth place going to the winner of a play-off game involving the remaining two teams.
From 2007 forward, as a result of a motion passed at Congress 2006, any remaining issues regarding equality of points will be determined by scores alone.

Leitrim Ladies win Connacht Junior Title !
Club HurlingCongratulations to the Leitrim Ladies from all Leitrim supporters.
Leitrim won on a score line of 1-14 to Sligos 3-07.
Leitirm last won a title in 1999 and this was the 4th successive year to meet Sligo in a final. This victory is richly deserved after all the heart breaking defeats during the last 7 year drought.
Once again well done to the team and management.

Club FootballTommy Murphy Cup – Quarterfinals – Short Report
Leitrim v Tipperary
Sat 29th July, Semple Stadium, Thurles
Leitrim are through to the Tommy Murphy Semis on Aug 12th after a comprehensive win over Tipperary. Leitrim played the better football throughout and were leading 0-8 to 0-3 points just before half time when Tipperary came back and scored a goal to make it 0-8 to 1-3.
In the second half Leitrim maintained their lead and ran out eventual winners with a 5 point advantage. This win is much welcomed by all after the recent heartbreak of losing to Mayo and Sligo by 1 point in each game in the All Ireland Series.
Carlow and London play tomorrow and the winners will play Leitirm on August 12th, the time and venue will be announced at a later date.
Final score: Leitrim 0-14 Tipperary 1-06

Ladies[b]Connacht Final:[/b]
On Sunday next Leitrim travel to Castlebar to take on Sligo in the TG4 Connacht Junior Final. With a 2.00pm throw in this is another opportunity for Leitrim to win a Connacht title last achieved in 1999. This is the fifth year in a row that Leitrim have contested the final, having been defeated by Sligo in the last 3 outings, it surely is Leitrim?s turn to take the prize. The 2006 panel have given a massive commitment this year, but there must be 100% focus and hard work over the hour if Sligo are to be dethroned. Supporters are asked to come in their numbers to support the team, the least they deserve for their efforts. Best of luck to all concerned.

All players and clubs are reminded to give one last effort to sell lines for the Connacht Final on Sunday. All completed cards are to be returned by club secretarys/ticket coordinators to Orla Bohan by Friday night. Lines are ?2 each and all support is appreciated. A ?500 prize is on offer to the winner.

The final of the junior 9 a side between Fenagh and Sean O?Heslins will take place at 8.00pm on Saturday evening next. The provisional venue is Aughnasheelin. St Marys defeated St Josephs in the playoff for a place in the Intermediate final and will face Glencar Manor in the final at a date to be confirmed.
[b]Division 3 league:[/b]
Gortlettragh were beaten by Aughnasheelin in Round 5 of the league last weekend.
[b]Minor:[/b]
In the championship wins for Glencar Manor, St Josephs and Dromahair over Mohill and St Marys have seen these three teams qualify for the semi finals. The winners of the Mohill v St Marys game last night will also qualify for the semi finals which are due to be played on 2nd or 9th August. In the 9 a side competition Kiltubrid defeated Sean O Heslins while Ballinaglera defeated Allen Gaels to progress to the semi finals. Sean O Heslins played Aughawillan last night with the winner progressing to the semi final while the loser will play Allen Gaels next week for the fourth semi final place.
[b]Under 16:[/b]
Clubs are reminded to forward entries for the under 16 competition to the Secretary as soon as possible with the competition commencing at the end of August.
[b]Under 14:[/b]
The Under 14 Shield 7 a side final will be played next Tuesday eveining in Ballinaglera at 7.00pm where Aughawillan face. Melvin Gaels.
[b]Under 12:[/b]
The competitions are reaching the final rounds and an update will be provided next week.
[b]County Board Meeting:[/b]
Clubs are reminded that a county Board meeting will take place next Monday night 31st July at 8.30pm in the Bush Hotel. This meeting will be attended by members of the National executive and all clubs must be present.

Club FootballLast weekend saw the first round of the Senior & Intermediate championship. First off were St. Marys and Gortletteragh who had a very competitive game with St. Marys laying down a marker with a 4 point win inÓgroup 4. Group 1s Bornacoola pipped Allen Gaels by one point and inÓgroup 2 Aughawillan had to 2 to spare over Annaduff. Last years champions Kiltubrid lost by the biggest score difference as they went down by 5 points to Mohill inÓgroup 3.
In the Intermediate Championship the opening game was on Saturday evening which was a draw between Drumreilly and Carrigallen inÓgroup 3. Sundays 3 games consisted of Group 1 clash between St. Marys and Drumkeeran with the latter winning by a goal. Group 2s Glenfarne/Kiltyclougher and Allen Gaels game resulted in a 8 point win for Glenfarne/Kilty.
The Group 4 encounter was between Aughnasheelin and Dromahaire with Dromahaire winning by the smallest of margins of 1 point.
Next round in the Championships will be the weekend after next as Leitrim participate in the Tommy Murphy Cup this Saturday at 1:30pm in Thurles.

With the playing of Round 2 of SFC/IFC on WE 05/06 August, all remaining championship should progress as previously planned. SFC/IFC B championships will be played as is appropriate, depending on results of above.
Junior A will progress as soon as it is possible for them to start after 2nd round of the Senior and Intermediate championship is played. Originally the Junior A was scheduled for the w/e 29th July, now earliest possible starting date is w/e 5/6 Aug. This may be subject to certain Senior games being played on Saturday allowing Junior teams to play on Sunday. Junior B & C will then start after Junior A has started with Junior B having an earliest possible starting date on the weekend of Aug 12th wiht Junior C on 19th August.
Reminder ! – These dates are provisionally agreed by the GAC for the Senior, Intermediate & Junior championships and are subject to confirmation by the GAC at the latest on the week prior to each date.

Leitrim U16s – Fr Manning Cup
Coiste na nÓgLeitrim U16s recorded a victory as they beat Sligo in the Fr Manning Cup last night on a scoreline of 3:17 to 4:11 in Ballymote, Co. Sligo.
They started badly going down 1:02 to no score after 5 mins but went on to take control of the game and ended the 1st half ahead by 5 points 1:12 to 2:05
Leitrim continued to control the second half until the last 3 minutes of added time when they conceded 2 very late goals.
Over all a fantastic team performance from all 15 players. Shane Flanagan from Aughawillan has scored 2 goals in the last 2 games i.e. against Mayo last Friday night and another 2 goals last night vs Sligo, he also scored a couple of points in both games. Shane is still U15 (he played at no.13 last night) and from Martin McGowan?s development squad, also playing last night from that U15 panel was Morgan Quinn (Aughawillan) who played at no.5 and Kevin Davy at no.7 (Carrigallen). Dean McVeigh (Drumkeerin) & Dara Singleton (St Mary) are also from the u15?s and were on the bench yesterday but have played on this years U16s in the Ted Webb and Fr Manning so yet again Martin McGowan is developing a fine group of players who were able to punch above their weight.
Leitrim had a penalty saved in the 1st half but Seamus Mulvihill scored a point from the rebound.
Sligo had a player sent of with 5 mins to go for 2 yellow cards.
Leitrim are still in with a shout in the Fr Manning but up against it as they have 3 games left, but last night was definitely the confidence booster that the U16 squad needed:
