League structure 2006
Club FootballWith all games completed in the 2005 Masonite League, the make-up of next years league has been finalised. A slight re-structuring means that there will be a reduction from six to five divisions in 2006, with two-up-two-down relegation in place across all divisions.
As explained elsewhere on this site, the league and championship structures will operate exclusively of each other from next year, meaning there ll be two Division 1 teams competing in the Intermediate Championship (Aughavas, Drumreilly) and two Division 2 teams competing in the Senior Championship (Glencar/Manorhamilton, Sean O Heslins).
Division 1 (12 teams): Allen Gaels, Annaduff, Aughavas, Aughawillan, Bornacoola, Drumreilly, Gortletteragh, Kiltubrid, Melvin Gaels, Mohill, St. Caillins, St. Marys.
Division 2 (10 teams): Aughnasheelin, Ballinaglera, Carrigallen, Cloone, Dromahaire, Drumkeerin, Glencar/Manorhamilton, Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher, Sean O Heslins, St. Marys.

Regretted death of Cormac Mac Giolla
GeneralIt is with great regret that we record the death of one of our greatest gaels Cormac Mac Giolla R.I.P. A real GAA man Cormac loved all things associated with the GAA and held a special love for his native Donegal. As Cultural Officer of Leitrim GAA, he was the driving force behind Scór Liatroma and took special pride in the many All-Ireland Titles won by the county.
Cormac is survived by his wife Mary, son Fergal and daughters Nessa and Ailbhe; to whom all in Leitrim GAA offer our sincere sympathy. Ar dheis D? go raibh a h-anam d?lis.

Player Eligibility for League and Championship
Club HurlingAt last December?s Co Board Convention, two motions relating to Rules 124 and 131, proposed by the Sean O?Heslins Club, were passed and referred to Congress.
Congress made a recommendation that Leitrim be granted derogation from these rules, because of the county?s small population base and the importance of clubs being able to field teams throughout the year.
The matter came before the Ard Chomhairle in May and derogation from these rules was granted to Leitrim in accordance with the motions as submitted to Congress.
Clubs now need to be aware of the implications of these motions for both Leagues and Championships.
Leagues
Motion 44 to Congress restores Leitrim to the League position as operated up to 2003.
A player who is eligible for a particular grade at the start of a League competition shall remain so eligible until the competition finishes.
If he plays in a higher grade in the current year?s championship, that will not affect his league status.
This will have particular significance for Division 3 league this year, where the second tier will not be played until after the championship. A club with a second team in this division will retain their panel of eligible players until the end of the competition.
In 2006 and subsequent years clubs will continue to name 13 players at the beginning of the year who have played senior championship and are eligible for senior only in the current year. Similarly with Intermediate and Junior leagues.
The essential principle is that if a player is eligible to play in the first round of a league he is eligible to play right through
Championships
The position with Championships in 2005 is as follows, starting with senior.
All players who play at any stage in the first round of the senior championship, including subs, are eligible for senior only thereafter in the current year. That first round determines your senior panel and all others are eligible to play intermediate or whatever the club?s next grade is.
A player who did not play in the first round of the Senior championship, but who plays in the second or subsequent round, or rounds, will continue to be able to play for the club?s second team in the current year?s championship.
Similarly, a player who plays in the first round of the Intermediate Championship, is eligible for Intermediate grade only thereafter in the current year, but can play Senior championship beyond this point without affecting his Intermediate status.
A player who did not play in the first round Intermediate championship, can play in a subsequent round without affecting his Junior status. Similarly with Junior A, B and C championships.
The essential principle is that if a player is eligible to play in the first round of a given championship, he is eligible to complete that competition including B or shield competitions.

Leitrim compete in Tommy Murphy Cup this Weekend
Club FootballLeitrim must compete in the Tommy Murphy cup this weekend in the first round against Tipperary. The details of the fixture were finally announced yesterday evening and Leitrim must travel to Thurles to play Tipperary at 5pm on Saturday evening.
The Tommy Murphy Cup is causing major headaches for the County GAC who have had to make a major decision to deferr next weekends Round 2 of the Senior Championship. This round will be moved to the end of the list and the championship will resume on the weekend of the 23rd-24th July with Round 3. One game which will be played is last weekends postponed fixture betweenÓglenfarne/Kiltyclogher v Gortletteragh which will be played on Sunday evening at 5:30pm in Ballinaglera.
The inclusion of Leitrim in the Tommy Murphy Cup is causing quite a stir in Leitrim and is making it very difficult for clubs as their County representatives are called back to duty. This is a year when a lot is a stake for Clubs as the Championship will decide which 7 of the current Senior clubs will have to drop a grade.
On the positive side the GAC have asked clubs to use this weekend to complete some outstanding League games which had previously been cancelled. As a result there are currently 4 x Division 1, 3 x Division 2 and 2 x Division 3 games rescheduled for this weekend. This decision will free up a weekend further along the line. This will mean that 235 out of 236 league fixtures will have been completed in a very busy league programme. Divisions 1 to 3 will be almost ready for the Tier 2 stage of the League competition which will start immediately after the Championship ends.
