Cyril Cassidy (RIP) Last Surviving member of Leitrim Minor team that reached the All Ireland Minor Football Final in 1945.

The death has occurred of Cyril Cassidy, the last surviving member of the Leitrim Minor team that reached the All Ireland Minor Final in 1945.

Cyril Cassidy, played at left full forward on the Leitrim Minor team beaten by Dublin in the Final. In the All Ireland Final he played on Denis Mahony, who subsequently captained Dublin in the 1955 All Ireland Senior Final. In the Connacht Final of that year, Leitrim beat Sligo in a replay by 2-6 to 1-5.

Cyril was from Drumeela and he worked in Dublin for many years and more recently lived in Termonfeckin, Co Louth.

He died on Monday 30th March in Gormanston Wood Nursing Home.

Coiste Contae Liatroma would like to express their condolences to his daughter Moira, sons Declan and Barry, grandchildren Sam, Max, Lewis, Fintan and Alastar, extended family, relatives and friends.

Leitrim Community Response Forum established to assist citizens during Covid 19 – Dedicated community support helpline to be available from Monday

At the instigation of Minister Murphy a Covid-19 Community Response Forum will be put in place for each City/County and coordinated by the Local Authority in each case.

A dedicated community support helpline will be established in Leitrim to assist at-risk members of the public in accessing non-emergency and non-medical supports and advice during the current public health emergency. The confidential phoneline service is being established by the new Leitrim COVID-19 Community Response Forum, which includes over a dozen agencies and organisations. The helpline is focused primarily on ensuring that vulnerable members of the community or those living alone can access deliveries of groceries, medicine etc. The role of the Forum is to ensure that there is a coordinated community response and to enable all voluntary statutory agencies to collaborate in support of our communities and particularly of our most vulnerable members.

The new phoneline is just one aspect of the Forum’s work. Its core aim is contributing to the community-wide effort to limit the spread of COVID-19. Leitrim COVID-19 Community Response Forum will ensure that the wide variety of groups working across the county to assist those in need, will do so in an organised, collaborative and targeted way. Leitrim COVID-19 Community Response Forum is there to ensure the very best use of the many resources assisting vulnerable persons with their daily needs at this unprecedented time, whether that is collecting medication, food shopping, social support and contact.

Chief Executive of Leitrim County Council, Lar Power, explains “There are a number of agencies and community groups currently doing excellent work in delivering care to older and vulnerable people in our communities across County Leitrim. These groups are currently operating independently of each other and Leitrim COVID-19 Community Response Forum’s role is to provide a targeted, integrated and coordinated approach to the delivery of these much-needed services to our more vulnerable citizens across the County during the COVID-19 pandemic. This public health crisis has changed life for so many, and we are there to help with that change. Leitrim County Council staff whose day-jobs have changed due to this crisis, will also be a resource in the management and operation of this community support programme along with our partner agencies/groups.

I wish to draw your attention again to our previously issued guidance document of March 20th.

We advised you that, until March 29th, games and training were suspended, club gyms were to close, and Player Injury Fund cover was suspended.

We subsequently instructed that club bars should also close for the period.

Club Operations

Please be advised that, in line with recent government announcements, these measures and closures are now extended to Sunday April 19 inclusive, at which stage arrangements will be reviewed.

In addition, we are now instructing GAA Clubs to close their facilities completely.

This is to include the use of all pitches and property for recreational purposes, including walking, casual games or gatherings.

Where it is not possible to restrict access please erect signage to the effect that all GAA facilities are closed and all activity suspended.

In order to facilitate an orderly resumption of activities when circumstances permit, Clubs are encouraged to proceed as normal with their membership registration process where practical. Clubs of course should be mindful of the possible changed financial circumstances of members.

Similarly, club lottos may proceed if they are run on an online basis and do not involve wholesale engagement with the public.

Clubs are also advised to refrain from undertaking new capital projects while support funding for this type of work is suspended.

Community Support

As a national/international organisation, we have a part to play in emphasising the need to practice social distancing, as outlined by the authorities.

It is imperative that we exercise extreme caution keeping two metres between people when taking physical exercise while encouraging people to consider using off-peak times when they are less likely to meet others.

Attached is the latest messaging from the HSE covering guidelines around volunteering which we advise our clubs to consider as they involve themselves in community-based volunteer efforts.

Individual volunteers are asked to register with Volunteer Ireland (26 Counties) and Volunteer Now (Six Counties).

We would like to thank everyone who has helped the GAA adhere to government guidelines up to this point.

We would also like to assure you that we, and the wider GAA team across our counties and provinces, are working hard to ensure that we are in the best possible position to return to our games when that time comes.

In the meantime, please stay safe, look out for one another and continue to adhere to the instructions of the Government and the Health Authorities at this most challenging time.

Recent Leitrim GAA Related Deaths – Maureen Gilrane and Michael Flynn RIP

Leitrim GAA wishes to express its sympathies with the families of the late Maureen Gilrane, Corralubber, Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim and the late Michael Flynn, Attyfinlay, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and formerly Tarmon, Drumkeerin.

 

Maureen Gilrane, formally a staff nurse at Our Lady’s Hospitial, Manorhamilton, was predeceased by her husband Josie, and brothers Packie and John (RIP). Sadly missed by her beloved children, Ursula (McGarry), Seán, Fintan and Enda; son-in-law; daughters-in-law and all her loving grandchildren; her sister, Julia O’Loughlin (Carraroe); her brothers Joseph Sheridan (Killargue) and Eamon Sheridan (Wicklow).

Maureen, who is the mother of current Ballinaglera GAA Club Secretary, Enda, was laid to rest in Fahy Cemetery following a private family funeral on Sunday, March 22nd.

 

Michael Flynn (Attyfinlay, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim and formerly Tarmon, Drumkerrin) Retired staff of E.S.B. 20th March 2020 (after a short illness) at Sligo University Hospital. Surrounded by his loving family. Deeply regretted and sadly missed by his loving wife Dolores, sons Maurice, Micheal and Milo, daughters Fiona and Cara, daughter-in-law Bernadette, sons-in-law Lorcan, Alan and Brendan, grandchildren Joey, Luke, Sadhbh, Méabh and Femhé, sisters Catherine, Ann and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and his many friends.

The late Michael’s funeral took place today, Monday March 23rd and was private in line with Covid-19 guidelines.

Leitrim GAA remembers the late Michael’s contribution towards the development of Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada over many years as a most valued volunteer.

Covid-19 Update – 18ú Márta 2020

As part of our collective efforts in dealing with the Covid-19 outbreak, it is our intention to communicate with our units on a regular basis and keep you informed of developments as they happen.

The GAA can today confirm that a number of coaching and games initiatives will not proceed in light of the prevailing circumstances.

These include the 2020 Féile competitions, the Celtic Challenge and activity involving Academy Squads.

It has also been confirmed that the Connacht Senior Football Championship meeting between New York and Galway, scheduled to take place in Gaelic Park, New York on May 3rd, has been postponed

The future for this fixture will be considered at a later date and in the context of the anticipated overall re-drawing of the national fixtures calendar for 2020 as necessitated by the ongoing disruption to the GAA games programme.

We will add to this list as further cancellations arise.

The Association would like to reassure our members that when games activity re-commences we will provide an adequate games schedule for our players at all ages and grades.

In the meantime, we are working on a unified approach for all of our units on the issue of Games Development and Administration personnel and will be liaising with our Provincial Councils and County Committees in the coming days.

Thank you for your combined efforts to date.

These efforts have the potential to make a massive difference and it is in this vein that we ask you to continue to mobilise the GAA network and our wider membership in the interests of public health and the greater good.

COVID-19 Operating Guidance for GAA Clubs

1.      Club games, training and team events

All GAA Club games, training and team events at all ages and grades are postponed until after the 29 March inclusive.The decision shall be monitored on an ongoing basis as the situation evolves over the forthcoming period. Further instructions will be issued before March 29th.

2.      GAA Injury Benefit Fund and insurance cover

GAA Injury Benefit Fund cover and Public Liability insurance cover is suspended from 13th March – 29th March inclusive, in respect of any playing or training activity undertaken by GAA Clubs or members or undertaken on club property.

Should an incident arise during this current period and, upon investigation, it is determined that a club acted in conflict with the advice of health authorities, cover will not be provided by the Liability Insurance.

3.      Club meetings

Club meetings conducted in person are not prohibited but are discouraged. Wherever possible, club meetings should be conducted via video conference or phone.

Where it is essential to conduct a meeting in person then such gatherings should be conducted in accordance with the following guidelines:

  • Adhere to the advice available from the health authorities;
  • Provide instructions and health and safety guidance in advance to all attendees;
  • Avoid shaking hands and maintain distancing within the meeting venue as far as possible and communicate this approach to attendees before and during the meeting;
  • Ensure surfaces are wiped down and cleaned in advance and after the meeting;
  • Ensure no attendees have travelled to an affected area or been in close contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus within the past 14 days prior to the meeting. Any individuals who fall into such category should be directed not to attend the meeting in person. Alternative measures may be put in place – video conferencing – for such individuals;
  • Ensure that all attendees record their name and contact phone number and provide same to the meeting facilitator.

The facilitator of a meeting has a particular responsibility to ensure that the meeting is conducted in accordance with the above guidelines and the advice of health authorities and that all attendees are advised of same.

4.      GAA Officer Training events

All official officer training workshops scheduled through the Club Leadership Development Programme are deferred until further notice.

All club planning workshops should also be deferred until further notice.

All club coaching workshops should also be deferred until further notice.

5.      Clubhouse facilities

GAA premises and property may remain open at the discretion of a club executive.

In such cases relevant health and safety and Coronavirus guidance should be prominently displayed on club property

Club premises must be kept cleaned and all surfaces are wiped down and cleaned regularly.

6.      GAA Club bars

Club bars and social centres may continue to operate but must adhere to the restrictions around gatherings of more than 100 people. Clubs should also promote social distancing.

7.      Social gatherings and events

Club Events should be cancelled or postponed if the expected attendance will exceed the permitted numbers per current advises. (max. 100 for indoor event – max. 500 for outdoor event).

Where events proceed, the club must record all attendees and their contact information.

8.      GAA Club gym facilities

Club gyms are to be closed and access suspended.

9.      Informal/Unorganised use of other GAA Club facilities and pitches

The Club may continue to facilitate normal community and recreational use of its pitches and playing areas by members.

10.  Use of GAA clubhouse facilities by third parties

Clubs should request regular third-party users of club property to review their activities in line with current advises from health authorities;

11.  GAA membership and registration

12.  GAA Clubs and the wider community

GAA clubs may still have a role to play as a focal point in the community and we encourage clubs to consider how you may be of assistance on a wider societal base. This may involve, subject to health authority guidelines, a co-ordinated approach to helping older members of the community or making facilities available to the health authorities or other entities after consultation with the GAA at central level.

Leitrim GAA Supporters Club Draw Deferred

Please be advised that due to the restrictions that have arisen as a result the GAA’s response to COVID-19 the 2020 Leitrim GAA Supporters Club Draw which was due to take place in Cox’s Steakhouse on Saturday 21st March has been deferred until a later date.  We will keep you updated once the picture becomes clearer closer to the end of the month and we are in a better position to announce a new date.

COVID -19 RESPONSE

 

In light of this morning’s Government announcement, the GAA, An Cumann Camógaíochta and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association have decided to suspend ALL activity at club, inter-county and educational levels until March 29 (inclusive) from midnight.

This is to include ALL games, training and team gatherings at ALL ages and ALL grades.
