Philly McGuinness Under 20 Memorial Cup – The Millennials take centre stage!!

Leitrim Under 20 Team will have the honour of commencing action in the new decade as they take on Fermanagh on Saturday next in Tempo with a 2pm throw in time. It is a significant fixture, if only in the sense that this is the first time an adult Leitrim Team will take the playing field in official competition with players born exclusively in the 21st Century!!

In completing the group stage of this development tournament, Leitrim is scheduled to play home games versus Longford and Sligo on Saturdays 11th and 19th January respectively with qualification for conclusion of the tournament to follow results.

The Connacht Under 20 Championship commences with a home semi final versus Mayo/Galway on Saturday February 15th and the Connacht Final is fixed for February 22nd.

Scór na nÓg Finals 2020

The County Final took place last Sunday, December 15th in the Mayflower, Drumshanbo. Fionnuala Maxwell hosted the final as Bean an Tí for the stage competition. With entries in all seven categories, it was strong and very entertaining competition. It was fantastic to have some dormant clubs returning to Scór Liatroma aris. Maith sibh go Leir. The quiz was held in the full table quiz format prior to the stage competition. Annaduff, Fenagh St Caillian’s and Carrigallen going head to head for the final 3 rounds of individual questions on stage. Tight to the bitter end, Carrigallan emerged the winners after the rounds were completed. The Leitrim champions now have to battle it out at the Connacht round for a place in the top 3 to qualify for the All-Ireland final.

Leitrim County Medals were presented to the winners by Chairperson of Leitrim Coiste Scór Chairperson Claire Crossan. Club of the year was decided by our judging panel. Annaduff was chosen by the 3 adjudicators. Fionnuala Maxwell accepted the Cormac MacGiolla Shield for Club na Bliana as the clubs Cultural officer which was proudly presented by Ailbhe McGill, Bornacoola. The Leitrim representatives will go onto compete for a Connacht title in The Town Hall Claremorris, Mayo on Saturday 11th January at 2.30pm. The quiz will be held on the same day prior to the stage competition in Claremorris GAA grounds, with a time to be confirmed. Leitrim will be hoping for winners to take part in the All-Ireland final to be held on February 1st in the INEC Killarney.

Talent Academy and Player Development Review Committee Report 2019

One of the largest consultation processes in the history of the GAA has found many good practices in place, but also a number of challenges to the development of our players.

At a time when sport is being challenged and influenced by elitism, globalisation, commercialisation and professionalism, the GAA is committed to its values of Amateur ethos, Community Identity and Inclusion.

At the beginning of his term GAA President John Horan established the Talent Academy & Player Development Review Committee emphasising: “The proper development of young players is an investment in the future well-being of our Games.”

Having overseen the adoption of the report by Central Council as of June, the Uachtarán described the recommendations of the report “as essential to re-establishing the values of the organisation, to ensure that Clubs are at the centre of all our development processes, supporting the retention of players in a sustainable way in line with our culture. “

Chaired by Michael Dempsey, the Committee members brought a depth of expertise and experience in coaching and player development and included Brian Cuthbert and incoming Director of Coaching and Games Development Shane Flanagan. The committee surveyed over 1000 stakeholders across all 32 Counties as part of the process.

The main focus of the committee was identified as establishing a policy for youth development which aligns club, school, third level and inter-county games programmes to address the current concerns with county talent academy squads and inter-county teams.

One of the first tasks of the Committee was the establishment of a Vision, Mission and Commitment for player development in Gaelic games, focussing on building a system for the 99% of players who participate across the pathway without ever reaching Inter-County Senior representation.

The Committee Report, launched in Croke Park today, adopts as policy a new Player Pathway Framework for Gaelic games. This framework is supported by enhanced Education Opportunities for all stakeholders, Improved Governance of youth development programmes and Synergised Games Programming across Club, School, Third Level and Inter-County.

Key recommendations include:

Player Pathway Framework

·        Repositioning the Club at the centre of all developmental processes and policies through a new Player Pathway Framework

·        Underpinning the framework with a best practice programme

·        Embedding synergised player development practices within the Club, School and Talent Academy environments

Education

·        Aligning education opportunities to the Pathway

·        Providing specific opportunities for all stakeholders – personnel, officers, coaches, and parents to deliver and support the programme

·        Through Coach Education instilling in all our stakeholders a developmental philosophy for player development

Governance

·        Building the management capacity at all levels to support the framework

·        Enhanced Longer term County Planning

·        Realigning funding to the new vision for player development

Games Programme

·        A Coordinated and coherent games programme aligned to the pathway framework, inclusive of meaningful and appropriate development-based competitions for our underage players

·        Aligning the Games Programme at Club, School and Inter-County to the Pathway

·        Ensuring the Games Programme up to U-17 is developmentally focussed

·        Coordinated windows for related games programmes within a coherent fixtures calendar

2020 Leitrim GAA Convention Motions and Nominations

There are only three motions to be debated at next Sunday’s Leitrim GAA Convention. Convention will take place in the Bush Hotel commencing at 3pm. The motions are as follows:

Motion 1

That Comhdháil Bhliantúil requests the Ard Chomhairle to appoint, as a matter of urgency, a committee to consider the implementation of a TMO (Television Match Official) using existing TV coverage only. This committee decides on which situations the TMO should be used (eg in relation to scores only, or other matters).

This committee produces recommendations in regard to future use of this technology and also examines any rule changes that may be required, depending on the situations where TMO use is recommended.

That clarification is provided through Páirc an Chrócaigh in situations where play is called back to view Hawk-eye. Confirming that all play is null and void and are all scores, yellow, black and red cards are rescinded which occur in the intervening period?

Aughnasheelin GAA Club would like to propose the motion that if a team at Senior, Intermediate or Junior level are unable to field a team of 15 players for a match then the playing number could be reduced to 13 aside and still be a valid match. This would apply to league competitions.

Question Time will be held as a table quiz on Sunday also at 12.30. The top3 teams will compete in the final 2 rounds on stage. The county final winners will progress to the Connacht provincial final on January 11th in Claremorris. At this level, the top 3 provincial counties qualify for the All Ireland final in February.

Leitrim Hurling Manager Announcement

Leitrim GAA is pleased to announce the appointment of Olcan Conway as Leitrim Senior Hurling Manager for 2020. Olcan has been the recent Manager of Carrick Hurling Team and in addition to leading them to three-in-a-row County Senior Hurling Championships, he led his local charges to the Connacht Junior Hurling Championship in 2018, which was a first-ever provincial success on the playing fields for an adult male team.

Olcan takes over from 2019 Lory Meagher Cup winning Manager Martin Cunniffe, who recently stepped down from the position, and Leitrim GAA wishes him the very best as he takes charge for the incoming season. Leitrim GAA wishes also to acknowledge and thank all other candidates who applied for consideration for the position and those who attended for interview.

The late Maureen Tiernan (née Crawford), Cloone Village, Co. Leitrim,

Leitrim GAA expresses its deepest sympathies to our Central Council delegate Enda Tiernan, his brother Shane and the extended Tiernan and Crawford Families, on the death of their mother, Maureen Tiernan, Cloone. Co Leitrim.

Maureen, who has been predeceased by her husband Séan and infant son Mel, is deeply regretted by and sadly missed by her loving sons; Shane and Enda, her brothers; George and Tom, daughter-in-law; Raquel, Enda’s partner Sheila, sister-in-law; Margaret, grandsons; Séan and Conor, nephews; Kenneth and Thomas, niece; Caroline, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

Funeral Arrangements

Remains reposing at Lough Erril Private Nursing Home, Mohill (N41 XE39) on Monday (9th December) from 3.00pm – 5.45pm followed by prayers. Removal to arrive at St. Mary’s Church, Cloone for 7.00pm. Funeral mass on Tuesday at 12 noon followed by burial to Cloone new cemetery.
