Save the Date: October 26th as Leitrim LGFA presents the KUBE

Leitrim LGFA has been busily preparing for the KUBE over the past couple of months and the countdown has started in earnest for the event which takes place in the Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon, on Saturday night October 26th. A total of 36 contestants representative of all clubs and other members of the GAA family will descend on the venue in the hope of becoming the Leitrim KUBE Champion 2020!!

Tickets are on sale for this not to be missed event priced at €20 each in all club areas from the various contestants and Leitrim LGFA County Board Officials. We look forward to a great night out and best of luck to all contestants and Leitrim LGFA.

Doors open at 7.15pm and the action gets underway at 8pm.

Under 17 and Under 20 Football Team Management 2020

Leitrim GAA is seeking expressions of interest from interested parties and nominations from clubs for the respective positions of Leitrim Under 17 and Under 20 Team Managers.

Essential Criteria: Garda Vetted, Safeguarding 1 and Award 1 Coaching Qualification

Desirable Criteria: Award 2 Coaching Qualification.

Expressions of Interest and Nominations to be sent to secretary.leitrim@gaa.ie by October 27th.

Nominations by clubs must have secured the permission of the nominee.

 

 

 

 

 

Gaeltacht Grants 2020

Leitrim GAA in conjunction with Leitrim County Council is offering grants for attendance at Gaeltacht courses to Leitrim boys and girls as part of their promotion of an Ghaeilge. These grants are open to boys and girls living in County Leitrim.

Some of the grants are part-sponsored by Gaeltacht colleges. In the case of cash grants, when students return they can claim their grant money on the production of evidence of having successfully completed the course.

The late Frank Mulvey, Williamstown, Kells and Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim.

Leitrim GAA wishes to convey its deepest sympathies to the family of the late Frank Mulvey, Williamstown, Kells, Co Meath and formerly of Ballinaglera, Co. Leitrim. Frank was a former inter-county Leitrim Senior Footballer and Hurler of the 1970s and indeed a former officer of Leitrim GAA serving as Assistant Secretary for a number of years during the 1980s. Frank’s brother John is a former Treasurer of Leitrim GAA and is currently a Leitrim GAA delegate to Connacht GAA Council.

Frank is predeceased by his parents Artie and Maura, and brother Brendan. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Fiona, children Arthur, Blaire and Richard, brothers; John, Tony, Vincent and Kevin and sister Mary-Frances, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, and his extended family.

Funeral Arrangements
Reposing at his home (A82 Y9N6) Wednesday 25th September from 3pm until 9pm. Removal on Thursday morning 26th September, arriving at St. Colmcille’s Church, Kells for 11am Funeral Mass. Removal afterwards to Ballinaglera Church, Co. Leitrim, arriving for prayers at 3.30pm approx, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Kiltubrid Pipe Band Celebrates 70 Years Young

Kiltubrid Pipe Band has reached a milestone in its existence by reaching its 7oth birthday this year and this weekend the official celebration of having reached this mark will take place in the Lough Allen Hotel, Drumshanbo, on Saturday night, September 21st, at 8pm. Family and friends of the band members, past and present, are invited to attend the function which Raheen Pipeband and Longford Pipeband will attend. Music will be by Camillus Kehoe and WEE 3 and there will also be food and refreshments.

Formed in 1949, Kiltubrid Pipe Band has been associated with many significant events across the region over the past seven decades, but particularly in the case of Leitrim GAA, the band has been the one permanent fixture associated with County Finals Day. It was significant and a telling factor of the respect in which the band is held in its association with County Final fare that a player in very recent times when asked for his greatest sporting memory for match programme pen pics listed “Marching behind the Kiltubrid Pipe Band” on the occasion of his first County SFC Final appearance!

Enjoy the celebrations around Kiltubrid, they are richly deserved.

Upcoming 2019 Club Championships Semi Final Action

The 2019 Club Championship season has reached a certain critical mass, with all Connacht Gold SFC and Smith Monumentals IFC semi-finalists having been decided over the weekend. Action next weekend moves onto the Vistamed Junior Football Championship Semi-Finals and will be followed on the weekend after next by the Intermediate and Senior Semi-Finals. There is also a feast of knockout action in the LGFA Leitrim Ladies Club Championships as their competitions have relatively reached a similarly advanced stage. St Patrick’s Dromahair’s Jamie Conlon appears on TG4 Underdogs tomorrow night.

Best wishes to St Patrick’s Dromahair’s Jamie Conlon who will participate in the 2019 TG4 Underdogs series. The show commences tomorrow night (Thursday) at 9.30pm. It is an honour for him personally, his club and his family and we wish him the best of luck on his journey. 

Connacht Gold SFC and Smith Monumentals IFC Quarter Finals next Sunday

The Connacht Gold Senior Football Championship and Smith Monumentals Intermediate Football Championship move smoothly into the knockout stages with eight matches down for decision next weekend. There is a measure of intrigue attached to all fixtures and it should prove to be an action-packed ‘Super Sunday’ commencing with the IFC derby clash of Annaduff and Bornacoola (Cloone 12 noon) and IFC Ballinaglera v Carrigallen (Drumshanbo 12 noon) and concluding with the ‘Clash of Champions’ Aughawillan and Mohill. who between them have captured the last five Senior Championship titles, in Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada at 6pm.

 

Connacht Gold SFC Quarter Final Matches Decided

Following this evening’s results in the Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Football Championship, the quarter-final pairings have been decided and these matches will be played on Sunday next, September 15th, at venues and times to be confirmed by CCC Liatroma at a later stage. The Relegation Series pairings have also been decided and these ties are scheduled to take place later in the month.

Newtowngore Engineering Minor Championship Final goes to Replay

St Mary’s Kiltoghert 0-14 Mac Diarmada Gaels 1-11

The eagerly awaited Newtowngore Engineering Minor Championship Final between St Mary’s Kiltoghert and Mac Diarmada Gaels ended level this evening at Avantcard Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada. While extra time had been provided for in the 6.30pm fixture, it was deemed unsafe by the referee to continue as darkness descended very quickly at the venue. The replay is set for next Friday evening, September 13th, at the same venue with 6pm throw-in and extra time to be played in the event of a further draw.

As regards the match itself, St Mary’s Kiltoghert held an 0-8 to 0-3 halftime lead but this had been wiped out by the 12th minute of the second period as the Gaels had the better of those earlier exchanges and aided by a goal the scoreline now stood at 0-9 to 1-6. From there to the finish it was nip and tuck all the way as the contest between the county’s two best Minor teams ended level and they must do it all over again.

Uachtarán CLG John Horan to officially open McGovern, Aughavas, Leitrim GAA Centre of Excellence on Saturday next.

The long-awaited official opening of McGovern Aughavas Leitrim GAA Centre of Excellence will take place on Saturday next, September 7th, and Uachtarán CLG Seán Ó hÓráin will be present to perform the official duty. The project has come a long way since the land purchase signing for the property was completed on 7th January 2005 and people passing the premises along the N4 at Annaduff cannot but be impressed by the transformation that has taken place in recent weeks as the finishing touches have been put to the congregation side of of the building, entrance and car park to have it looking ship-shape for the big day.

Recent fundraising through the Leitrim Wall fundraising campaign has afforded Leitrim GAA the opportunity to complete the development to a standard that all Leitrim people can be justifiably proud of. We are indebted to all of the people far and wide who have contributed to what has turned out to be a momentous scheme and we are sure that all will be delighted that their contribution has been put to excellent use. In addition to this, we are also most grateful to Tony and Bernadette McGovern, London and Aughavas, who have secured the naming and advertising rights to this property over the next 15 years. McGovern, Aughavas, is a name that has been synonymous with a huge degree of generosity towards Leitrim GAA over the past quarter of a century and this will continue into the future with the name being associated proudly with the conclusion of this development.

While the pitches have been in use since January 2016 with the dressing rooms and gym functional, it has taken this combined final push to ensure that the remainder of the internal and the external public side of the property have been completed to the very high standard that is already evident, playing surface wise, at the rear of the property.

We have waited a long time for the conclusion of an almost 15-year long project but can be very happy with the end product which, when officially opened, will be practically debt-free and that, in itself, is an achievement and something well worth the wait. We are indebted to Croke Park and Connacht Council GAA for the contributions incrementally made, to a total of €2m, over the duration of the development. This is inclusive of the €250k that was made available from the opening of Croke Park to the FAI and IRFU in the noughties. Leitrim GAA Clubs are to applauded to have taken the decision back then to hand over that grant towards the project. All in all, the project has cost €2.8m and will be a jewel in Leitrim GAA’s crown, while serving as the proud home of many future generations of Leitrim GAA players.

We are looking forward to Saturday and extend an open invitation to all to attend. The timeline is as follows:

  • Underage games and Coaching from 11am to 12 noon, hurling and football
  • Refreshments 12 noon onwards with the opportunity to view the development
  • Speeches and Official Opening from 1pm to 2pm

Leitrim GAA Sponsors Recently Bereaved

Leitrim GAA wishes to convey its sincerest sympathies to two separate families which have been associated with sponsorship of our activities and have suffered recent bereavements.

To the Dolan family of the Bush Hotel, Ck-on-Shannon, long-time and recent main sponsor of Leitrim GAA we extend our sympathies on the death of Martin Dolan, formerly of Cortober, Ck-on-Shannon, who died on June 25th in China. Martin’s Funeral Mass took place today, July 27th at 12 noon in St. Michael’s Church, Drumlion, Carrick-on-Shannon followed by burial of Ashes in Ardcarne Cemetery.

Heartfelt sympathies to his wife Irina, daughter Naomi, brothers Jim, Joe & David, sister Marion, extended family and friends.

To the McCartin Family, Newtowngore, we extend our sympathies on the death of Ann McCartin on July 26th. Her son John, Newtowngore Engineering, is the sponsor of the Leitrim Under 17 Competitions over the past two seasons. Anne will be missed by her husband Joe, son John, daughter-in-law Edel, grandchildren Olwyn, Eábha, Doireann, John and Tiernan, her sister Marie McCartin, brother Eamon, brother-in-law Tommy, sister-in-law May, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many friends.
