Gaeltacht Scholarships

Leitrim County Committee GAA is offering grants for attendance at Gaeltacht courses to Leitrim boys and girls as part of their promotion of an Ghaeilge. These grants are open to registered and paid-up members of Leitrim GAA clubs, boys or girls.

Some of the grants are part-sponsored by Gaeltacht colleges. In the case of cash grants, when students return they can claim their grant money on production of evidence of having successfully completed the course.

Application forms can be printed from the link below or can be had had from the Secretary of any GAA club.

Rule 6.21(4) will determine Table Placings in both Competitions.

Venues: First team out to have home advantage. If home team’s pitch or home team’s nominated pitch is unplayable they must travel to their opponent’s pitch. If the opponent’s pitch is unplayable the CCC will decide on an alternative venue.

Finals at neutral venues

The 13 a side will start on Sunday, October 29th @ 12 noon.

The start date for the 15 aside will depend on Aughnasheelin/Mohill progress in Connacht Club Championships.

Club Forum Postponed tomorrow night

Due to the nationwide red alert as a result of Storm Ophelia tomorrow night’s Club Forum has been postponed. It will take place on Monday night, October 23rd.

Carrick Hurlers take 32nd County Senior Hurling Title

Our congratulations to the hurlers of Carrick Hurling Club who earlier this afternoon claimed the club’s 32nd County SHC title with a clear 3-11 to 0-8 victory over Cluainín Iomáint. Played in Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, the Carrick lads were into their stride from early on and held a 1-5 to 0-5 halftime advantage. They quickly added to this advantage and two late goals by Liam and Colm Moreton cemented the title win over a luckless Cluainín team. Man of the match was Colm Moreton who scored 1-5 while his brother Liam added the other two goals. It was heartbreaking for the lads from Manorhamilton as they have been defeated in the SFC and SHC Finals in the space of seven days. Nonetheless, for the Carrick Hurlers, this title is a most fitting tribute to the late Bernard Murray, their staunchest member over many years who passed away suddenly last month.

Following on from our very successful underage review last year we are now continuing with our commitment to ensuring we have the best possible structures for all our club players. With this in mind, we are holding a club forum on the 16th October to examine our Adult structures within the county. We want every club to have an active say in developing our future. Each club is asked to bring 4 delegates to this forum included in this should be Chairperson/Secretary and at least one adult player.

Please find attached a few pointers for discussion and I would ask all clubs to have their own meeting to discuss so we can get a broad view of what our needs are.  We will also forward a survey for all our club players in the next few days and please forward this to all your players.

I want to thank everyone for the great response to the underage review and would encourage you all to give this forum your full support and together we can make a bright future for us all. Any club which would like to make a submission to Leitrim GAA at secretary.leitrim@gaa.ie in advance of the forum would be more than welcome.

League Competitions

  • Structure of league competition
  • Competitively of games
  • Regularity of games
  • Availability/non-availability of County players for league season
  • Scheduling of games – thoughts regarding midweek games; league finished before club championship and how it can best be achieved; league games remaining after the club championship alternative.
  • The number of League games – do you think that we should reduce the number of teams per division or should we play more games without county players in the current structure.
  • Shield – what are your thoughts regarding the Shield Competition in its current format or is there a better alternative
  • In the ideal situation, a player from a county that is predominantly strong in one code should play between 16 and 20 matches, between league and championship in the stronger code, depending on the number of hurling games provided. Cumann na mBunscol Liatroma INTO/GAA Mini 7s

Allianz Cumann na mBunscol INTO/GAA Girls Mini 7s took place this morning at the Centre of Excellence. Gaelscoil Liatroma, Scoil Mhuire NS Ck-on-Shannon, Scoil Mhuire NS Bornacoola, Fatima NS Cloone, St Manchan’s Mohill and Annaduff NS participated in a feast of all that’s best in schools’ football. Scoil Mhuire NS Ck-on-Shannon and Gaelscoil Liatroma contested the venue final with Gaelscoil Liatroma qualifying for next week’s county finals. Well done to all the participants.

Connacht Gold SFC Champions 2017

Congratulations to Mohill on winning the 2017 Connacht Gold Senior County Final in Páirc Seán yesterday. They had last tasted SFC success in 2015, when they landed the Fenagh Cup after a replay victory over Glencar/Manorhamilton in dramatic circumstances. This time, despite being two points in arrears at the interval 0-6 to 0-8, they made a bold statement of intent in the third quarter with five unanswered points that set them up for the final push towards victory. At the conclusion of events yesterday, they were worthy champions and withstood the very best that Glencar/Manorhamillton could throw at them to emerge victorious on a 0-14 to 0-11 scoreline.

It must be stated that Glencar/Manorhamilton, appearing in their eight final in ten seasons, were most worthy finalists and contributed handsomely to the best showpiece final in recent times, a contest that kept the huge attendance on the edge of their seats until Brendan Sammon’s final whistle.

But at the end, Mohill took the club’s seventh SFC title and Captain Daniel Beck, along with lifetime Mohill supporter Mary Kennedy lifted the Cup to rapturous applause. Mohill full forward Keith Beirne who contributed seven points on the day was awarded the Gabriel Cronin sponsored Man of the Match award.

 

Fox Monumentals IFC Champions 2017

Congratulations to Aughnasheelin on winning the Fox Monumentals Intermediate County Final in Páirc Sean yesterday. It was a glory day for the lads from the parish of Oughteragh who reclaimed the Frank Reynolds Memorial Cup in front the largest crowd to witness an Intermediate decider in recent times. The noise and colour that greeted both victors and their opponents, Leitrim Gaels, onto the field was just a taste of what was to come as both sides enthralled their supporters and neutrals alike to a titanic struggle of epic proportions.

Aughnasheelin, who last tasted success at this level in 2008, were first to settle and raced into an early lead before Leitrim Gaels, appearing in their first ever IFC decider, found their feet. But settle they did and were just four points adrift at the interval as the lads in green and white led 0-9 to 0-5. The contest swayed one way and then the other as both sides attempted to steal a march on the other as the contest flowed from end to end. Gradually Leitrim Gaels reduced the deficit to a single point with just two minutes to play. However, captain Barry McWeeney secured the title for a delighted Aughnasheelin with a pointed free in the third minute of injury time and, on this occasion, the Gaels had to settle for second best. However, they may reflect on their excellent contribution to a decider of the finest quality and their turn will surely come in the future.

Barry McWeeney accepted the Cup from a proud Cathaoirleach Traolach O Baoil to the joyous approval of his club mates and supporters as Aughnasheelin look forward to taking their place in the 2018 SFC. Conor Cullen was awarded the Man of the Match award for his excellent contribution on a historic occasion for his club.

 

The late Brendan Canning, Dristernan, Drumshanbo and Allen Gaels GAA Club

The death has occurred of the former Allen Gaels and Leitrim player, Brendan Canning, Dristernan, Drumshanbo. Brendan enjoyed a distinguished playing career as a goalkeeper which spanned the early 1960’s to the mid 1980’s.

He has the unique distinction of representing Leitrim at Minor, U-21, Junior and Senior level in the same year while still in secondary school. He enjoyed club success by winning a three in a row of Division 1 League Titles with Allen Gaels in 1973, 74 & ’75 and was part of that team which contested 6 league finals on the trot and lost a senior championship final in 1973 after a replay. Brendan’s son, Andy, has also represented Allen Gaels and Leitrim.

His involvement in the club extended well beyond the playing side and he was a coach, referee and administrator, serving as secretary for many years. Brendan was also a keen contributor to Scor and excelled in Question Time.

Brendan is survived by his loving wife Rose, sons Trevor & Andrew, daughters Andrea & Trina, brothers John and Mel and sister, Joan as well as extended family & a wide circle of friends. Reposing at his residence at Dristernan Drumshanbo on Saturday from 4pm to 9pm, on Sunday from 1pm to 6pm with funeral mass on Monday, October 9th in St. Patrick’s Church Drumshanbo and burial afterwards in the New Cemetery, Drumshanbo. House private at all other times please.

Cumann na mBunscol Liatroma INTO/GAA Boys Mini 7s

The first round of the INTO/GAA Boys Mini 7s took place earlier this morning at various venues in the county. In the Centre of Excellence. Annaduff NS, Scoil Mhuire NS-Bornacoola, Fatima NS-Cloone, St Manachan’s-Mohill, Gaelscoil Liatroma and Scoil Mhuire NS Ck-on-Shannon were the participants. After an enjoyable and competitive morning’s football, Gaelscoil Liatroma got the better of Annaduff NS in the venue final and will progress to the County Finals to be held later in the month. Well done to all.

Adult Structures Review 2017-Players’ Survey

Leitrim GAA is currently undergoing a review of its adult structures and will conduct a Club Forum on Monday, October 16th. A vital part of this review is to ascertain the views of the main stakeholders in our playing structures, that is you, the club player. To this end, we have circulated earlier this week all club secretaries with a survey to send to all adult players. You can now access the survey here.
