Jackie Gallagher – Melvin Gaels and Leitrim Footballer – RIP

The death has taken place of one of Melvin Gaels’ greatest footballers, Jackie Gallagher. Jackie was fullback and captain when the Gaels won their first ever Senior Championship in 1959 and he was in the same position as they completed a four-in-a-row of titles from 1959 to 1962. He won a fifth title in 1965. That wasn’t Jackie’s only senior title because he was the cornerback on the Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s team that won the 1956 Senior Championship. Ironically, Melvin Gaels beat O’Heslin’s in the 1959 final to take their first title and, in a most unusual scoreline, it finished 1-6 to 0-0. Jackie spent his working life teaching in Ballinamore Vocational School.

Jackie Gallagher was also a prominent county player and, while he started as a cornerback, he starred in goals for Leitrim throughout the golden period when they reached four Connacht finals in a row. He was the goalkeeper in three of them including the memorable 1958 final against Galway. In 1962, he won a Connacht Junior Championship with Leitrim and also played in the 1959 National League Semi-final against Derry in Croke Park. In times when few goalkeepers took the kick outs, Jackie’s long deliveries were famous and would be eminently suited for today’s “mark”. Jackie was also brother-in-law to Aidan McGowan, who was Uachtarán Comhairle Connacht.

Our sympathy to his wife Tess, daughters Finola, Maureen and Aileen, son Niall, family and friends.

Sonas síoraí d’fhear uasal macánta thar na bearta, mar mhúinteoir agus mar pheileadóir.

Fr. Manning Round 3

Leitrim 3 – 12    Meath 7 – 14

Midway through the second half of this very entertaining game, the scoreboard showed the sides level, 3-10 a-piece, however, in a three-minute blitz Meath ended the game as a contest, scoring three goals.

Leitrim started the game with a sense of urgency, Oisin Bohan and Caolan Clancy pointed frees and two superb goals from David O’Connell and Donal Casey left them leading 2 -02 to 0-00 after 4 minutes. Meath responded well, Points from Joe Moore (free), Matthew Costello(play) and a goal from Evan Corrigan pegged back Leitrim but further points from Diarmuid Kelleher(play), Caolan Clancy and Paul Keaney (frees) kept them in control.

Meath made two substitutions, bringing on Ian Birmingham and Conor Quigley and both players made an instant impact, firing over a point each and Birmingham setting up Matthew Costello for his second point from play. Meath levelled the game in the 20th minute with an excellent goal from Conor Quigley. Eoin McLoughlin replaced the injured Niall Keegan on the Leitrim team. Meath scored their third goal from a Luke Mitchell penalty which looked a very harsh call against the Leitrim defence. Jack Hughes and Tom Prior pointed, Oisin Bohan scored Leitrim’s third goal, reacting smartly to the ball coming back off the upright before Luke Mitchell brought the first half to an end with a pointed free.

Half Time – Leitrim 3 – 07      Meath 3 – 06

The second half opened with Meath points from Ian Birmingham, Matthew Costello and two pointed frees by Luke Mitchell with Leitrim replies from Oisin Bohan, Diarmuid Kelleher and Caolan Clancy, 12 minutes played and the sides level. In the following 3 minutes, Joe Moore(two) and Evan Corrigan goaled and further points from Mitchell, Birmingham and Colin Hawdon sealed the win for Meath. Two Caolan Clancy frees and 1 -01 from Meath sub Aitzol King ended the scoring.

Final score Leitrim 3 – 12    Meath 7 – 14

Leitrim will be disappointed at the manner of the defeat, they played very well up until the Meath blitz but players will learn that mistakes at this level are clinically punished.

A special ceremony with governmental representation in Croke Park today saw 58 GAA clubs recognised as the first official ‘Healthy Clubs’ on the island of Ireland.

The clubs, at least one in each of the 32 counties, can now proudly fly a flag above their grounds (endorsed by both Healthy Ireland and the Public Health Agency in NI), letting their members and communities know that they value health and wellbeing as much as leagues and championships.

We are delighted to report that Melvin Gaels GAA Club will fly the ‘Healthy Club’ Flag at their club grounds as a result of their participation in this very worthwhile initiative. We take this opportunity to congratulate all at Melvin Gaels GAA and hope that their example will inspire more of our clubs to follow in 2018.

Pictured at the presentation earlier today are Katherine Williams and Mary McSharry in the company of project ambassador, recently retired Tyrone footballer Sean Cavanagh.

Our congratulations to Leitrim Hurlers Conor Byrne, Clement Cunniffe and Liam Moreton who were honoured with selection on the Lory Meagher Champion 15 selection for 2017. The PWC All-Star presentations took place in the Convention Centre, Dublin earlier this evening. This is excellent recognition for the lads and their team who qualified for the Lory Meagher Cup Final for the first time earlier in the season. Conor and Liam are pictured below with Team Manager Martin Cunniffe who picked up son Clement’s award on his behalf.

LORY MEAGHER CHAMPION 15: Darren Sheridan (Cavan), Matthew Hynes (Cavan), Sean Corrigan (Fermanagh), Shea Curran (Fermanagh), Kevin Banks (Sligo), Cormac Behan (Sligo), Ronan Crowley (Lancashire), Nathan Unwin (Lancashire), Conor Byrne (Leitrim), Liam Moreton (Leitrim), Clement Cunniffe (Leitrim), John Collins (Warwickshire), Dean Bruen (Warwickshire), Paul Uniacke (Warwickshire), Liam Watson (Warwickshire).

It was a busy weekend for the County Under 16 footballers. On Saturday last they hosted Offaly in Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada and a poor start cost the team as the Faithful Boys recorded a 3-12 to 2-10 victory. However, earlier this afternoon the lads bounced back at the Laois GAA Training Centre with a terrific performance and were excellent value for a 2-14 to 1-5 victory over the home side. Well done to the team and management.

Next up for the lads is a trip to Duganny GAA Training Centre on Saturday next as they take on Meath.

John Morrison’s ‘Game Senses’ Coaching Workshop which will take place on November 9th at the Centre of Excellence has now been booked out.

Leitrim Post Primary Schools senior final

Carrick Community school 1 – 14

Ballinamore Community school 1 – 09

Carrick C.S won the Leitrim Post Primary schools senior final, defeating Ballinamore C.S in a very entertaining game played on Thursday evening in the Leitrim GAA centre.

Ballinamore CS started much the better, points by Ciaran Cullen and Eoin McCaffrey had them leading by two points after 3 minutes. Carrick CS began to get a grip in the middle third and by the twelfth minute they lead four points to two following an excellent Jack Barnes point from play and three pointed frees by Stephen Goldrick. Shane Beirne from play, a Mark Keegan free and a superb Ciaran Cullen point left only a point between the teams after 18min but Ballinamore CS struck the first goal with their next attack, Mark Keegan finishing to the net from a tight angle. Carrick CS responded well and finished the half much stronger, kicking four unanswered points from Cian Ffrench, Shane Beirne and two Stephen Goldrick frees to lead at halftime by two.

Ballinamore CS opened the second half scoring with a Mark Keegan point following a foul on Aaron Hoare. Carrick CS responded with a pointed free of their own and over the next ten minutes points from Ciaran Cullen, Tom Prior and Cathal McHugh for Ballinamore CS, Jack Barnes and Shane Surlis for Carrick CS left the score Carrick CS 0 – 12 Ballinamore CS 1 – 08. The decisive score came in the seventeenth minute when a long ball into the Ballinamore CS defence was flicked to the net by David O’ Connell. Ballinamore CS pressed hard for the remainder of the game but their only reward was a point from a Mark Keegan free, while Carrick CS added two Stephen Goldrick frees to run out five-point winners.
