Connacht 60×30 Championship

Action in the Connacht 60×30 Championship continued at the week-end with the Singles Championship at semi-final stage. There were five Leitrim Handballers in action: Martin Raftery (Intermediate), Leo Logan (Junior), Joel Smith (Junior B), Barry McDonagh (Junior C) and Ed Lee (Emerald Masters). Despite playing some top class handball none of Leitrims finest progressed to the finals. The Intermediate semi-final was played on Friday night in Williamstown between Drumshanbos Martin Raftery and Ollie Conway (Williamstown). This was Rafterys first time to play in the Intermediate Championship and he took the game to the experienced Conway, losing the first game 21-17, taking the second with a comprehensive win 21-9, but narrowly lost the tie break 21-18. In the Junior semi-final Leo Logan came up against a stronger Denis Creighton (Roscommon) in Roscommon on Saturday losing on a score line of 21-15, 21-14. The Junior B semi-final was played in Collooney between Joel Smith and Jason Earlis with the Sligo man taking the game 21-11, 21-15. In Junior C Barry McDonagh took on Mayos Aidan Connachton in Castlebar where he was defeated on a score line of 21-8, 21-10. To round off a disappointing week-end for Leitrims handballers Ed Lee was defeated in the Emerald Masters semi-final by Michael Hearty (Mayo), after taking the match to a tie break losing the first game 21-8, winning the second one 21-18, he lost the tie break 21-12.
The 60×30 Doubles semi-finals are fixed for this week-end with Leitrim having home advantage. The Intermediate pairing of Martin Rafery and Donal Wrynn, and Minor pairing of Jarlath Scollan and Alan Wrynne play in Fenagh on Sunday with a start time of 3.00pm where they face Galway opposition.

LÉIRIÚ (STAGE PRESENTATON) AND  RECITATION/STORY TELLING

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael (GAA) through its cultural branches, Coiste Náisiúnta Scór and Coiste Náisiúnta na Gaeilge is holding an open competition for newly composed original scripts, which would be available to clubs for performance in Léiriú Stáitse and Aithriseoreacht/Recitation for any performer taking part in Scór competitions.   The competition details are as follows:-

1)     Script for Léiriú Stáitse.   Léiriú Stáitse is a stage presentation with a theme based on an aspect of Irish life, culture or folklore (including GAA).   It would be a dramatic presentation in serious or comic form, of not more than 10 minutes duration, and which would be performed by groups of at least 3 and not more than 8 people.   Simple props may be used.

1st Prize – €500

2nd Prize – €300

2)     Aithriseoireacht / Scéalaíocht – Recitation / Storytelling.   This competition is for a solo performer and it takes entries in the form of recitations, monologues, poems and stories relating to Ireland (including GAA), its history, local folklore, people or places.  Each piece to be of not more than six minutes duration.

1st Prize – €500

2nd Prize – €300

The script writing competition is open to all.   Fáilteofar roimh iontrálaithe as Gaeilge agus cuirfear duais speisialta de €200 don Léiriú / Aithriseoireacht Gaeilge is fearr muna mbíonn ceann i nGaeilge sa céad nó sa dara áit.

Prizes will be presented to the winning entries by Aogán Ó Fearghail, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, at Páirc an Chrócaigh, on a date to be announced.   All the Scripts entered will be made available to GAA Clubs in Book Form for use in Scór competitions.   Though Scripts are freely available to Clubs, this will not prevent the author from using the work in another Forum should he/she wish to do so.   The author will be acknowledged in any performance.

Entries should be sent by email to Scór@gaa.ie on or before the closing date of 11 February, 2017.

It is the hope of both Coistí that this project will generate a good response.

The late Micheal Loughlin, Glasnevin, Dublin and Ballinaglera, Co Leitrim

One of the great Leitrim GAA Supporters, the late Michéal Loughlin was the first Chairman of the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club in Dublin. He was so passionate as a supporter he used to attend the Leitrim team training sessions in Dublin. After a game he would recall every move, every kick, every score and every wide that he claimed he would have scored himself. He was always great to meet and the one thing with Mick was he was never in a hurry. He was always up for a song with Lovely Leitrim top of the list followed by the Joe Dolan’s  song ‘More & More’ His favourite Leitrim players were Mickey Quinn & Mickey Martin

Mick retired as an Inspector of Taxes 5 years ago. He coped heroically and most positively with an illness over the past 5 years during which he taught us all a lot about life and the values that really matter. The sudden end has come as a shock to all.

The Leitrim GAA Supporters Club would like to extend their sympathy to his family & friends particularly his sisters Teresa, Eileen, Margaret, Madeline, Laureen, brothers Gene, Cyril, Seán, Noel, brothers and sisters-in-law; aunt Margaret, uncle Ted and all his extended family.
Michéal was laid to rest in Fahy Cemetry on Monday last, July 4, following his funeral mass in St Hughs Church, Ballinaglera.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.
