The late Frank Heavey, Ballinamore Sean O Heslins and New York

Frank Heavey, one of the greatest footballers to don the Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s jersey has died suddenly in New York. Frank played senior football for Leitrim in the early 1980’s and would have been on the team for longer only for emigrating to America during the lean years of the mid 1980s. Frank won three senior football championships with the Ballinamore club. His first was in 1982 and he captained the winning side in 1986. He was in America in 1988 and missed their successful run in the championship but was back playing at centre half forward when they won the final in 1990. He was an outstanding full forward and a gentleman both on the field and off. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Heavey family on their sad loss.

The Late Seamus Wrynn, Tarmon, Ballinamore and New York

Seamus Wrynn, a native of Tarmon, Ballinamore, who died in New York on Friday last was a well known player for many years with the Ballinamore Club, before emigrating to the USA in the 1950s.

Seamus immediately became involved with the Leitrim Club in New York and remained a loyal supporter long after his playing days.He was also a prominent member of the Leitrim GAA Supporters Club in New York and acted as an official at the many Joe McInerney Golf Classics that raised funds for the Leitrim Club, for Leitrim Co Board and for a number of charities.
Sincere sympathy to his wife Nell and to his family.

2016 may be the Centenary year of the Easter rising but it is now also the year St Marys rose to new heights in Scór. The Carrick club incredibly outdid all expectations taking 4 Connacht titles back to Naomh Muire, Leitrim, in St Johns hall Lecarrow on Saturday last.

An amazing achievement for the club winning Figure Dance, Recitation, Instrumental music and Ballad group. It was surely history in the making for Laura Crossan winning the recitation competition, taking her Connacht 2016 medal total to 4 as multi talented lady was also part of the 3 winning Naomh Muire group events.

Leitrim also retained the Cormac MacGilla cup which was won in recognition of Leitrim success, the cup has never been outside of Leitrim since it was introduced to the competition, it was presented to Cathaoirleach Coiste Scór Liatroma Claire Crossan.

St Marys were first to the stage in Rince Foirne and won the Figure Dance, seeing off St Aiden’s of Roscommon. This is the clubs 4th qualifier to the All-Ireland, having won it for the first time in 2012 and they will be hoping to go the extra mile and bring the title back to Leitrim.

Paula Kiernan from CarrigallenÓgave a fabulous self-penned performance in solo singing but Norrie Kane of Abbeyknockmoy took the title back to Galway.

St Marys represented Leitrim in Instrumental Music; they gave a flawless foot tapping performance, a first win for the club in music at Connacht.

Laura Crossan also from St Mary’s club went down a treat in Recitation delivering to all in the crowd with a very entertaining piece and clinched her first Connacht Recitation medal. St Mary’s last win in recitation was in 1979 when Tom Fitzgerald won the All- Ireland for the club. The renewal of that Connacht title in this competition was a long time in the waiting for the Marys.

A fabulous win for St Marys Ballad group who gave yet another outstanding performance. Having made it to the All-Ireland on 3 separate occasions in past years, elation was felt among the Leitrim supporters for this exceptional group. It really will be a St Marys year with this group also making their fourth All-Ireland debut.

The fantastic and witty Cloone were unfortunate not to take the Leiriu. Fantastic stage presentationÓgiven to roars of the audiences laughter but dismay among the Leitrim’s suporters when Elphin were awarded the title.

Mary Mostyn competed for St Marys in Rince Sean-Os, a very well executed performance, the execution of her traditional old style steps with some very nice movements, a fabulously uplifting competition to watch as Mary delivered with such passion and poise. The winner was Roscommon.

Set Dancing was represented by the fabulous young Fenagh team, a fine performance but unfortunately not the winners. The clubs dancers will be feeling dissapointment not to be joing their question time team representing the county in Killarney. Cloones Gerry McGovernÓgave a few words on the night in his role as Cathaoirleach Coiste Scór Connachta.

The late Aiden McGowan, Carns, Grange, Co.Sligo and formerly Melvin Gaels GAA Club.

The death has occurred of former Melvin Gaels GAA stalwart, Aiden McGowan. A retired Primary School Teacher, Aiden was immersed in the GAA all his life. A member of the famed McGowan family of the Melvin Gaels GAA Club, he shared in the considerable upturn in his club’s fortunes in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Melvin Gaels won 4-in-row Leitrim SFC titles 1959-1962.

Off the field Aiden was a most accomplished GAA administrator at all levels from Club to Páirc an Chrócaigh. He was Vice Chairman of Coiste Chontae Liatroma in the mid 1960s. He notably held the positions of Uachtarán Comhairle Connacht 1973-76 and indeed as Senior Leas Uachráran Cumann Lúthchleas Gael had the honour of presenting the Liam McCarthy Cup to winning Kilkenny Captain Billy Fitzpatrick, following their victory over Galway, in 1975. Uachtarán Cumann Luthchleas Gael, the late Donal Keenan was unavoidably absent on that date. He later held the esteemed position of Trustee of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael. Aiden was a lifelong Melvin Gaels GAA man and held many positions on the Club Committee, most recently as Honorary President.

Aiden is sadly missed by his loving wife Kathleen, sons Enda and Brian, daughters Aideen and Orla, brothers Fr. Séamus (Texas), Máirtín, Padraic, Brendan, Kevin and Colm, and extended family and many friends. His remains are reposing at his home on Monday from 3pm to 9pm and on Tuesday from 3pm to 7pm. Removal on Tuesday evening to The Church of Mary Immaculate, Grange, to arrive at 8pm. Requiem Mass on Wednesday at 12 noon with burial afterwards in Ahamlish Cemetery.
