The late Mark Rooney, Glencar, Co. Leitrim and Glencar/Manorhamilton GAA Club.

Leitrim GAA wishes to express its profound sympathy to the Rooney Family, Glencar, Co Leitrim on the sad and untimely passing of the late Mark Rooney, after a long illness, bravely borne.

Mark played at the very highest level with his club Glencar/Manorhamilton, and won a SFC medal in 1999, while still eligible for Under 21 grade, as the club bridged a 22 year gap from its previous and first ever title recorded in 1977. He also shared in the clubs 2009 triumph as selector/player in the midst of the clubs four-in-a-row series of triumphs.

Mark, a multi talented sportsman, represented Leitrim at all underage grades from Under 16 to Under 21 from 1993 to the end of the millennium and was a most skillful player, in addition to being the ultimate sportsman.

He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him over his all too short 38 years, but mostly by his family. We wish to record our deepest sympathies to his wife Natalie, sons Zach and OScór, mother Dympna, his brother Aidan, sister Rosaleen, brother in law Camillus, sister in law Denise, father and mother in law Tony and Patricia, nephews and nieces Nathan, Eden and Eli, his uncles, aunts, cousins, extended family and many friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

Connacht U14 60×30 Title for Leitrim

Cormac Scollan secured his first Connacht 60×30 title with a stunning performance in a top quality final played in Roscommon on Saturday, where he overcame the challenge of Sligos Connor Finn, winning on a score line of 10-15, 15-9, 15-3. In a match that was played at a high tempo with a demonstration of all the skills of handball it was an absorbing game for all the neutrals present. In the first game Connor Finn got off to a strong start with a serve that the Fenagh lad got hard to get to grips with in the early stages and went on to win the game 15-10. The second game was a must win one for Scollan and with a combination of good serving and passing shots, he won some key rallies and took the game 15-9. With the momentum from the second game with him Scollan made maximum use of his dominance and gave a top class display of serve and kill shots and went on to take the game 15-3. On his route to the final he defeated Mayos Lorcan Conlon in the semi-final on a score line of 15-4, 15-13. He is now through to his first All-Ireland semi-final which will be played on October 2nd against Ulster opposition in a Connacht venue.

Hurling, Unveiling and Dancing 1916 style in Glenfarne on September 10th

Local historian Francis White believes that the last time Sean Mac
Diarmada, the 1916 patriot, left from the Railway Station in Glenfarne was
October 1915.

The Station house is now Franciss beautifully restored home and he will
kindly open his doors to the public for a very unique event on Sept 10th.

At 7.00pm the flagstone on which Mac Diarmada stood for the last time as he
departed on the train will be unveiled. A beautiful inscription has been
added by a local artist in Mac Diarmadas memory.

Some of the very words spoken by the patriot will be narrated. Spectators
are invited to come dressed in period costume to  recreate the atmosphere of
the era.

From the Station house the gathering will walk the short distance by
lamplight to The Rainbow Ballroom of Romance for a vintage tea  party.

At 9.00pm the”Step back in time” dance begins where there will be a full
bar. Refreshments will be served after the dance.

Where does the hurling come in you ask!

Hurling was Mac Diarmadas sport so, in his memory, earlier in the day, at
5.00pm Kiltyclogher/Glenfarne G.A.A. club will host the first ever under
twelve hurling match followed by a football match on the Glenfarne pitch.

After the games the young sports people will be led by a pipe band to
The Railway Station close by, for the unveiling ceremony.

On Saturday September 10th come join us in any or all of these unique
events;

The Hurling and Football at 5.00 pm
The Railway Station unveiling at 7.00pm
The Rainbow tea at 8.00
The Rainbow dance at 9.00pm

Come on your high nelly, your pony and trap, your vintage car or just come
as you are. All are welcome.
Lets create the magic of the time on a day that is shaping up to be a
very memorable one.

This is a 2016 commemorative event jointly organised by Glenfarne
Development Committee and Kiltyclogher/Glenfarne G.A.A. club.
