The late Michael Martin, Ballinamore. RIP

Coiste Chontae Liatroma CLG and Leitrim GAA followers join in mourning the death of former Ballinamore and Leitrim football star and noted Gael, Michael Martin, Aghadark, Ballinamore.

We extend sincere sympathy to his wife Annette, daughters Susan, Louise, Caroline and Aideen, sisters Carrie, Joan and Evelyn, sons-in –law, brothers –in –law, sisters-in-law, his beloved grandchildren, uncle, nephews, nieces and other relatives on their very sad loss.

Michael won six Leitrim Senior Championship medals with Ballinamore in 1967, ‘68, ‘ 69, ‘72, ’73 and 1975 and was team captain in the 1973 final. As well, he also won a number of County League titles, together with numerous club tournaments. When the Ballinamore three-in –row team made an historic visit to play New York in gaelic Park in 1969, Michael was one of the main organisers and one of the star players on that trip.

During the 1960’s, Michael was a regular on the Leitrim senior team, his usual position being left half back, the same as had been held by his famous footballing uncle, Mike Dillon of Cloone, Leitrim and New York. When Leitrim reached the 1967 Connacht Final against Mayo, Michael was selected to partner Terry Blessing of Aughavas at midfield. Whether lining out with his club or county, Michael Martin could always be depended on to give of his all and had great pride in his jersey.

Michael will repose at his home on Tuesday June 9th from 11am to 4pm, with removal to St. Patrick’s Church, Ballinamore, arriving at 7pm. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 12 noon on Wednesday, with burial in Oughteragh Cemetery.

Solas na bhFlaitheas dá anam uasal, dílis.

Lory Meagher Cup 2015

The Leitrim Hurlers will be hoping to continue their recent rich vein of form as they head to Brewster Park, Enniskillen, tomorrow for a 5pm throw in. Following two good wins over Warwickshire and Lancashire, the hurlers are right back in contention for a place in the Lory Meagher Cup Final 2015.

A win over the heretofore unbeaten Fermanagh would have Leitrim awaiting the results of the final round of fixtures on Saturday week when the finalists will ultimately be decided.

Fermanagh play Sligo in their final group game and Leitrim will have completed their four game series tomorrow.

Its all to play for for the team and we wish them the best of luck in tomorrows vital tie.

 Kellogg’s GAA Cúl camps

This year there are some exciting changes to the kit, with a stylish new half zip top and T-shirt replacing the original jersey, togs & socks. The backpack is still part of the new kit, while the cost of attending the camps remains the same as the last number of years. On-line registration is now available and we would encourage parents to use this method of registration if convenient as it greatly helps with assigning coaches etc to the camps. Standard application forms will be available through the schools from next week.

The following are the dates and venues for the Kellogg’s GAA Cúl camps 2015 in Leitrim.

W/C – 06/07/2015 – Manorhamilton, Ck-on-Shannon, Ballinamore & Mohill

W/C – 13/07/2015 – Kinlough, Drumshanbo & Annaduff

W/C – 20/07/2015 – Dromahair, Aughavas & Gortletteragh

W/C – 27/07/2015 – Drumkeerin, Fenagh St. Caillins & Leitrim Village

Free places competition

A chance to win a free place at any of this year’s Leitrim Kellogg’s GAA Cul camps will commence in the Leitrim Observer in the next few weeks.

2015 U14 County academy trials

The first of our Trials for this year’s U14 County talent academy took place in Drumkeerin GAA centre on Friday last. 37 boys took part and we would like to thank each and every one of them for having the interest to attend.

A trial for players from the following clubs, Cloone, Mohill, Bornacoola, Gortletteragh, Annaduff, Carrigallen, Aughavas, Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins, St. Bridget’s, Kiltubrid & Fenagh St. Cailins will take place in Cloone GAA grounds on Saturday next May 23rd, commencing at 12 noon.

Only players born in 2001 are eligible for the 2015 academy.

National Football blitz day

Our U15 squad had a good day in Longford on Saturday last in the first of this year’s National blitz. Our first game against Sligo was a very one sided affair with Leitrim winning easily. The second game of the day against Louth proved to be a very competitive game with Leitrim winning by six points at the final whistle. Well done to all the lads.

Primary school blitz

Our 3rd & 4th class Primary school blitz have been badly hit by the poor weather over the past two weeks. Blitz have taken place in Aughavas, Gortletteragh, Drumkeerin and Ballinamore, but we were forced to cancel the blitz planned for Dromahair, Drumshanbo & Carrick. We will try and reschedule over the next few weeks.

Hurling blitz

This year’s U8,10 & 12 hurling blitz will commence on Wednesday May 27th at 7pm in St. Mary’s GAA grounds Ck-on-Shannon. All clubs are asked to confirm in advance what numbers at each age level will be attending.

Lory Meagher Cup Leitrim v Lancashire

Following last weekend’s victorious trip to Birmingham, where the Leitrim Hurlers had a great victory over Warwickshire, it’s back to home soil again tomorrow as the lads face Lancashire in Ballinamore with a 2.30pm throw in.

Buoyed up by last week’s result we are hopeful of a home victory which would set up nicely a final round match on Saturday 23rd in Enniskillen versus Fermanagh.

In any event it’s one day at a time and for the moment let’s wish the team and management the very best of luck in tomorrow’s encounter.
