The Leitrim GAA Open night was held in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada on Monday May 4 at 5pm. It was a most enjoyable occasion for all concernned and the kids had a great time. We would like to thank all who particpated and particularly the members of the Leitrim Senior and Minor Squads and their Management for their interaction with the youngsters and for all the activities they wholeheartedly engaged in and indeed organised for the kids. The Leitrim Junior Team will play Galway in the 2015 Connacht Junior Championship in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada at 7.30pm this Wednesday evening, May 6. A young squad that comprises members of a number of the Leitrim Senior Panel that are eligible and this years Under 21 Panel will give of their best to reach the Connacht decider. We wish them and their Management the very best in this fixture and hopefully we will have a Provincial Final to look forward to on May 17.

Leitrim Senior Hurlers open up the summers championship action as they face neighbours Sligo in the 2015 Lory Meagher Cup in Ballinamore on Saturday next at 5pm in Ballinamore.

Following on their very competitive Allianz League campaign, the hurlers will be hoping for a winning start to this years championship competition. The sides met earlier this season on March 15th with the Leitrim side coming out on the right side of a thrilling 1-15 to 2-10 victory in Markievicz Park In Allianz Leagues Round 2. A repeat result will set the lads up nicely for the trip to Birmingham to play Warwickshire next weekend.

Intermediate Team: The Ladies Tesco Homegrown Division 3 National Football League campaign came to an end last Sunday when they were defeated by Sligo in the semi final. The final score Leitrim 1-8 Sligo 2-9. Despite the blow the ladies will now be focussed on the Connacht Championship and are determined to make it two in a row. 
 
U14s in Connacht B Final:The U14 county team are set to play Sligo in the Connacht B final on the 31st of May. Venue and time to be confirmed.
 
U13 Development: Due to take place in BallinÓgleara on Saturday 2nd May at 12 noon. This date to be confirmed by Kieran Moran.  All girls born in 2002 are  eligible to play.
 
Club League Fixtures: After the Intermediate Ladies loss to Sligo on Sunday in the Tesco homegrown NFL Division 3 all club league matches will resume this weekend.
 
Division One: All matches are scheduled for Friday the 1st of May at 7:45pm. Aughawillan (home) v Mohill. Dromahair (home) v Oughteragh Gaels. Kiltubrid (home) v St Josephs.

Juice Plus Dawn Run: Our annual Juice Plus 10k Dawn Run will be taking place on the 20th June 2015 at 6am. Kellogg’s GAA Cúl camps

This year there are some exciting changes to the kit, with a stylish new half zip top and T-shirt replacing the original jersey, togs & socks. The backpack is still part of the new kit, while the cost of attending the camps remains the same as the last number of years. On-line registration is now available and we would encourage parents to use this method of registration if convenient as it greatly helps with assigning coaches etc to the camps. Standard application forms will be available through the schools from next week.

Coaching Workshop – Coaching Goalkeepers 7pm Thurs May 7th   

Goalkeeping has always been an important position on any team but in the last while, a new emphasis has been put onÓgoalkeepers to be the extra link with his outfield players and not just a shot stopper. With this new emphasis onÓgoalkeeping, Leitrim GAA coaching and games have invited two of the Countries top Goalkeepers, former Longford goalkeeper Damien Sheridan and current Offaly goalkeeper Alan Mulhall  to present a workshop entitled “Coaching Goalkeepers”. The workshop is open to all coaches and to any goalkeepers who wish to attend and will take place in Allen Gaels GAA Centre, Drumshanbo at 7pm on Thursday evening May 7th. We would encourage as many coaches and goalkeepers to attend.

 

Hurling blitz

The first of the National hurling blitz will take place on Saturday next in Longford. Our U14 squad play in Longford Slashers GAA centre, Longford town while the U16 squad play in Edgeworthstown. First game for both squads commences at 11am.

“Be There. All The Way”

2015 GAA Open nights Week – 4th – 10th of May

 Leitrim GAA Open night Monday 4th May 2015 5pm

Each year since 2012, the GAA has had coordinated County Open nights in advance of the Championship Season. The Leitrim Open night will take place in Páirc Sean Mac Diarmada on Monday next, May 4, commencing at 5pm. This will provide an opportunity for people of all ages to come in and meet their county players of both codes and engage in pitch activities. It is essentially a family evening and what better way to round off the Bank Holiday Weekend than to spend it engaging with the footballers who have worked so hard all spring to ensure that they will be at their best facing Galway/New York in Páirc Sean Mac Diarmada on May 17th and also the County Hurlers who will commence their Lory Meagher Cup Campaign v Sligo on Saturday next in Ballinamore.

The County Minor Footballers who are busily preparing for the Connacht MFC in June will also be in attendance.

Young players attending are encouraged to wear County/Club Colours and wear footwear that will allow them to participate fully.

No joy for leitrim participants in this years All-Ireland Scór Final.

The new Question time quiz took place separately than the main event early on Saturday morning in Citywest Hotel. Leitrim were represented by previous All-ireland title holders Bornacoola, however The Brothers Pearse club from Cork emerged the All-Ireland winners. Ferbane of Offaly came in second and Cornafean of Cavan in third.

Glencar/Manorhamilton hoped to relive their 2011 win but Glenflesk of Kerry won the title for a second year. Aiden Dockery of Bornacoola gave a very moving rendition in recitation, Noel Joyce of JK Brackens club in Tipperary claimed this years title with a very witty piece of drama and was declared the All-Ireland champ.

Congratulations to all involved, fine performances were delivered on stage on Saturday, well done to all. Many thanks to all the supporters who travelled the journey to Dublin on Saturday.

Intermediate Team: The Intermediate ladies had a great win over Roscommon last Sunday in the Division 3 national football league play off. The final score was Leitrim 5-10 Roscommon 3-11. This Sunday they will take on Sligo in the semi final. Throw in at 4pm in Ballyhaunis GAA grounds. 

 
Division Three: This weekend their will be two matches in the division three club league. Gortletteragh (home) v Aughawillan (2) at 12pm. 
Bornacoola (home) v St Josephs (2) at 12pm. 
 
U14 County Team: Hard luck to the u14 county team who were defeated by Mayo last Saturday. The girls put up a great performance and were narrowly defeated. It was a great competitive match and despite the loss the girls have secured a place in the B Final.
 
Dawn Run: Our annual Juice Plus 10k Dawn Run will be taking place on the 20th June 2015 at 6am. This is year will be our 5th consecutive run in conjunction with Juice Plus and we are excited for it already! Registration will take place at 5am on the morning. €10 Entry. Leitrim GAA wishes to record its sincere sympathy with the family of the late Fergus O Rourke, Dunshaughlin, Co Meath, and formerly of Aughavas, Co Leitrim on his sad passing yesterday.

Fergus was a former Leitrim County Player of the 1960s and also played Senior Club Football with his native Aughavas in that decade, a decade during which Aughavas won two Leitrim SFC titles in 1963 and 1966 and in each of which Fergus played a pivotal role.

The O Rourke Family relocated to Skryne, Co Meath during the early 1960s and have gone on to enjoy many successes both on and off the field of play in the intervening decades. We tender our sincerest condolences to all family members on this sad occasion.

Fergus, who died peacefully at Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, is survived by his loving wife Aidie and sons Tiernan, Brian, Breffni and Fergus Jnr. He will be sadly missed by his family, his adored grandchildren, daughters-in-law Rebecca and Louise, son-in-law David, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and his many friends.

His remains are reposing at his home from 2pm this Wednesday afternoon. Removal on Thursday to St Patrick & Seachnall Church, Dunshaughlin, arriving for Funeral Mass at 12 noon. Burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery. House Private on Thursday morning.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

All-Ireland final weekend is finally upon us. The county competitors prepare to shine in Citywest Hotel this Saturday 25th April with the hope of taking home an All-Ireland Scór title.

Bornacoola represent Leitrim in Question Time at 11.30am.

Glencar-Manor take to the main stage at 3pm to representing Connacht in Figure Dancing, followed by Aidan Dockery Bornacoola in Recitation.

Tickets will be available on the door on the day at €20. Wishing Bornacoola and Glencar-Manorhamilton the very best of luck, and safe travel to all competitors and supporters.

This year under 12 hurling clubs got the chance to experience playing in our National stadium. The young hurlers from Cluainin Imaoint and Carrick hurling participated and we would like to thank players, mentors and parents for making the day a great success. A great day was had by all involved and team photos should be available this week.                                                     

Kellogg’s Cul Camp Coaches

Leitrim GAA Coaching and Games development committee will operate 13 Kellogg’s GAA Cul camps throughout the County during the month of July. We now wish to recruit suitably qualified personnel to coach on these camps.

Those interested must be over 18 and preferably attending third level college, have attained as a minimum Foundation award coaching qualification, have completed the Code of best practise in youth sport and be Garda vetted.

Club Coach Mentor Programme

Connacht GAA are promoting a new club/tutor liaison programme. This programme will consist of 3/4 visit’s from one of our qualified tutors. The idea is to review what is ‘Best Practise’ in coaching, in areas such as club coaching structure and systems. It is envisaged that the tutor will act as a facilitator for all the club coaches. Follow up visits will focus on practical sessions with the agenda been agreed between club and tutor. A nominal cost of €100 per participating club has been set. Clubs wishing to avail of the programme should contact Thomas Keenan or Padraig McGourty.

For the clubs already signed up it is hoped to commence the programme in the next few weeks.

Connacht 40×20 Juvenile B Championship 

The Quarter and Semi Finals of the 40×20 Juvenile B Championship were played in Collooney and Castleconnor Handball Alleys in Sligo on Sunday, with Leitrim players in Boys U13 Doubles and Boys U14 Doubles reaching the Connacht Finals. The Fenagh U13 paring of Fergal McLoughlin and James Wrynn comprehensively defeated the Roscommon duo of Adam Samuals and Aaron Dolan 15-0, 15-0 in their semi-final. The Drumshanbo U14 duo of Gareth Gilmartin and Fergal Moran came up against the Roscommon pairing of Ian Duffy and Tommy Drury in the quarter final and defeated them on a score line of 15-13, 15-6, to set up a semi-final meeting with Sligos Darragh Barrins and Aaron Bruen. In a tight match that went to a tie break, the Leitrim lads emerged victorious on a score line of 15-12, 10-15, 15-10. In Boys U11 Drumshanbos Ciaran McMorrow defeated Irslam Yakhyafu (Roscommon) in the quarter final 15-8, 15-12. He came up against Ballymotes Cormac Finn in the semi-final, where he won the first game, lost the second, and despite battling hard he lost the tie break on a score line of 15-10, 5-15, 3-15. In Boys U14 Drumshanbos David Gallagher was defeated by Peter Kirwin (Roscommon) 6-15, 7-15. In Boys U12 Doubles Conor Flood and Sean Lynch (Drumshanbo) were defeated by Ben Carrigan and Luke Powell. There was no joy also for the U11 Doubles pairing of Karol Foley and Dean Cornyn, Ronan Moran (Boys U12), Aoibhe Logan (Girls U11) and Edel ODonnell (Girls U13). The
