James Rooney – Leitrim Under 21 Captain 2015

James Rooney from the Glencar Manorhamilton GAA club has the honour of captaining the Leitrim U21 footballers for the 2015 Connacht Championship campaign. 

Donning the County Jersey is very much in his blood, as he has already worn the green and gold at Under 14, Under 16 and Minor level, as well as being a leading member of the Leitrim Under 21 team that shocked All Ireland Under 21 champions, Galway, in last years Connacht Championship Semi-Final.  Naturally, the dream of this twenty year old quality defender is to lead his county into a second successive Connacht Final.  James realises the great challenge ahead, playing Under 21 specialists, Mayo, in their home ground, but winning is very much in his psyche, having captured a number of Underage, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Championship titles with his club.  The opposition nor the venue hold no fear for this young football star – who was also selected as Leitrim Young Hurler of the Year in 2011 – and who leads the Leitrim side next Wednesday in search of victory.

Glensmen take Allianz League Points Leitrim 1-13 Antrim 1-18

After an intriguing but always interesting encounter it was the visitors who took both Allianz League points in Páirc Sean Mac Diarmada today. Despite a bright start and raising the green flag early on, Leitrim were playing catch up for the best part of this match and in the end could have no complaints about the result following a most competitive encounter. The result all but finishes Leitrim’s promotion prospects but, nonetheless, the team building that is ongoing for the future will give lots of heart to Leitrim followers as the players gave an excellent account of themselves and kept battling away to the final whistle.

Played out in front of 300 supporters present, teams exchanged wides before Alan McLoughlinÓgave Leitrim the perfect start as he finished expertly to the net having been put through by Danny Beck. The lead was short lived as Antrim’s Michael Pollack cooly finished an Antrim attack to the Leitrim net from close range. Kevin Conlan, with a free, and Justin Crozier, from play, exchanged points before Conor Murray and CJ McGourty, free, opened up a two point Antrim lead. Kevin Conlan(free) reduced the deficit to the minimum before Tomas McCann and Alan McLoughlin exchanged points from play. Ryan Murray and CJ McGourty both pointed from play for Antrim, either side of an excellent save by Leitrim keeper Cathal McCrann from the boot of Murray. McGourty and Darren Sweeney traded points from playbefore  Antrim opened up a four point lead courtesy of McGourty, a free, and full forward Michael Pollack from play. A Kevin Conlan free proved to be Leitrim’s last score of the half as Antrim added further points from McGourty(2) and Conor and Ryan Murray, to leave the half time score Leitrim 1-5 Antrim 1-12.

Leitrim started the second period brightly with quick points from Ronan Kennedy, both play. James Laverty steadied Antrim’s ship with a point before two points from Kennedy and McLoughlin  reduced the margin to five. McGourty and Kennedy again exchanged points and Paddy McGowan chipped in with an excellent point to reduce the deficit to four points. That was as good as it got for Leitrim, as Antrim were in control of the scoreboard. Two McGourty frees reopened a six point margin and one always felt that it would take another Leitrim goal to turn the tide. However, Kevin Conlan and Darren Sweeney did manÓge to bring matters back to four with two points. Antrim still had the upper hand and midfielder OwenÓgallagher and wing forward Paddy McBride stretched the lead out to six points with time running out. All that remained was time for Kevin Conlan to convert a free and the issue was decided.

A spirited performance from a most competitive Leitrim team that is learning its trade and next on the list is a trip to Tullamore to face table toppers Offaly on Sunday next, throw in 2pm.

Intermediate Team: After securing their 3rd win in a row on Sunday the Intermediate Ladies will take on Longford this Sunday the 1st of March at 2pm venue TBC in the 4th round of the TESCO Homegrown NFL.

 

Division 3 League: The Division 3 league kicks off this weekend with the following fixtures:Sunday march 1st-

Connacht Cumann na mBunscoil Finals

St Patricks NS Drumshanbo represented Leitrim at the Connacht Finals played in Salthill at the weekend. The school took home 3 Bronze medals in Boys U11: Ciaran McMorrow (Singles) and Karl Foley and Dean Cornyn (Doubles). In total St Patricks NS had 9 handballers taking part in the Cuman na mBunscoil Connacht Finals: Evan Foley, Amy ODonnell, Dean Cornyn, Edel ODonnell, Emmet Moran, Ronan Moran, Ciaran McMorrow, Aoibhe Logan and Karl Foley.

In the Connacht Championship there was one Semi-Final played at the weekend. In Boys U13 Fenaghs Cormac Scollan was victorious over Conor Finn (Ballymote) on a score line of 15-1, 15-3. The Connacht Finals are set for this weekend where Cormac will be joined by Jarlath Scollan and Alan Wrynne (U17 Doubles).

Tesco Homegrown Ladies National Football League

Intermediate Ladies: The Ladies are out again this weekend when they take on Fermanagh in the 3rd round of the Tesco Homegrown NFL Division 3 league at 2pm in Ballinamore on Sunday. All-Ireland Scór na nÓg Finals Results

The All-Ireland Scór na nÓg Finals took place last Saturday 14th February in Citywest Dublin. Leitrim Gaels Ballad group gave a fabulous performance and sang their hearts out but lost out to The Downs club from Westmeath.
 
In Question Time, Liatroim was represented earlier in the day by Bornacoola. Tough questions put to the teams this year and was eventually won by Kerry. With the new procedures for the quiz since 2014, it is now a table quiz style competition with all 32 counties taking part and a nice twist, the top 3 teams recieve a medal.
 
The one and only medal to go to Connacht went to Aughamore of Mayo for Set Dancing, a first for the club in 25 years.
 
Irish TV were also in citywest to record the days proceedings. Two special documentaries from All-Ireland GAA Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir Finals will be broadcast later this year bringing our cultural highlights to a global audience. Further details of the broadcasting to follow.

The Late Josie Murray RIP

The Late Josie Murray RIP

It is with sadness and regret, not alone in Carrick-on –Shannon, but throughout Leitrim and indeed much further afield, that we learn of the passing  the footballing legend Josie Murray. After a short illness, borne with great tolerance and dignity, Josie lost his battle with life on this morning (Thursday) at his home surrounded by his family and friends. Born in 1938 he attended The Presentation Brothers National School where his natural athletic ability was quickly identified and nourished. He represented St. Marys at every level and was a member of their first winning county championship team in 1958 wearing the number 6 jersey. He added his second county medal sixteen years later when he played at corner back with Sheemore Gaels, an amalgamation of St. Marys, Kiltubrid and Fenagh. He too won numerous hurling championship medals with St Marys as he was also a talented hurler and played on the county hurling team over many years.

While his achievements with his local club are well documented it is with his beloved Leitrim that Josie will be best remembered. He captained the famous Leitrim minor team that won the Connacht championship in 1956 and gave a heroic display at his customary centre half back position in losing to Dublin in the All Ireland final. He quickly moved on to the senior panel and was an integral part of the great senior county team that was defeated in the Connacht finals of 1958,59,60, and 61. He represented Connacht and was unfortunately on the losing teams of 1961, 63, 64 and 65 on St. Patricks Day. In recognition of his talent and skill he was chosen as centre half back on the Leitrim team of the Millennium.

On finishing school Josie commenced employment with local firm John Gilmartin and later moved to New York where he played football for Leitrim while working there. Josie and his beloved wife Evelyn moved back to Ireland to raise their family and Josie moved to Dublin and commenced working with Bus Eireann, quickly moving to the rank of Inspector. While in Dublin he was an avid supporter of all things Leitrim and was a founding member of the Leitrim Golf Classic and the Dublin Branch of the Leitrim Supporters Club helping in no small way in the efforts towards raising funds to promote the fortunes of all Leitrim teams. Indeed only last May he was a prime mover of a golf classic in Carrick-on-Shannon to raise funds for the Leitrim Senior Team on the eve of the Connacht Championship and when Tommie Moran compered a great “Up for the Match” night prior to the County Final in the Bush Hotel just last September Josie was one of his guests who reminisced on the St. Marys club over many years and did so with wonderful wit and charm, finishing off his contribution with a great rendering of one of his favourite songs.

Josie’s deep faith was evident from his commitment to the local church. He was always available to prepare for the various celebrations taking place by placing bunting and flags suitable for the occasion in the church grounds. He was also a Chairperson of the Church Finance Committee.

To his wife Evelyn, sons Declan, Niall and Keith, brothers Johnny and Seamus, and to his extended family all Leitrim Gaels extend their heartfelt sympathies.

Funeral Arrangements:

Reposing at his residence, LisnÓgolt, Ck-on-Shannon, this evening Thursday from 7pm to 9pm and tomorrow Friday until 5pm. House Private tomorrow Friday 5m to 6pm with removal to St. Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon, arriving at 6.30pm.
Mass of Christian burial on Saturday at 12noon with funeral afterwards to St. Mary’s Cemetery. House private from 5pm on (Fri) evening please.

The programme will be delivered in Manorhamilton on Wednesday February 18th and in Carrick on Friday February 27th. Fundamental skills are the foundation for all sports and we are encouraging parents and former players to help out with the programme. Sports First Aid Training – ManOging the Injured Player

Sports First Aid Training – Managing the Injured Player This course covers a comprehensive range of topics to prepare participants to administer First Aid care. Participants will learn practical skills so that they can deal competently with situations that may arise. The Sports First Aid course will help to improve the quality of first aid available in the sport and exercise environment. The Sports Injuries Course is aimed at coaches, mentors, teachers, supervisors, players, athletes and all volunteers involved in sport and exercise. Make sport safer for everyone and help to ensure that any injuries are dealt with appropriately when they first occur and until arrival of health care professional. Training can be provided in your club or central venue as demand requires. Course materials will be provided and a Certificate of attendance along with an Irish Heart Foundation Heartsaver AED certificate will be issued on completion of the training.
