Leitrim GAA Coaching & Games Development 

Hi all, just wanted to up-date you all on the child conference in Sligo IT which I would encourage as many as possible to attend, especially coaches working with children up to U12 both hurling and football. Also please see our planned coach education courses for spring 2015. To inform clubs on the new FRC requirements on coach qualifications for 2015, I will send out the details to you all later in the week.

 

Child Coaching Conference   

We would encourage all coaches working with children to attend this conference on Tuesday evening next in Sligo IT. The conference will incorporate a sit down and a practical session. The keynote address will be given by Paudie Butler and will look at the ABC/Fundamental development of the child. The practical demonstration will be hurling based but can be adapted for all gaelic games. This is one of those not to be missed opportunities for coaches to listen to and observefrom one of the foremost coaches on child development in the Country.                                                                                                         

There is no charge for attending this conference.

Code of best practise in youth sport                                                               Courses will be given as part of the foundation award courses. These courses will be open to coaches who may have completed foundation at another time.

Scór na nÓg County Finalists

The Leitrim Scór na nÓg semi-final took place last Saturday in The Mayflower, Drumshanbo. As always the entertainment was fantastic, the competitors were a credit to their clubs and mentors who coached the young participants.

The County Final is being held on Sunday 14th December in the Bee Park Community Centre Manorhamilton at 2pm.

Comhghairdeas le Proinsias

Coiste Chontae Liatroma would like to join in congratulating Dr. Frank Brady, New York on his nomination as the 2015 Leitrim Guardian Person of the Year. At a function in the recently refurbished Ballroom of Romance in Glenfarne on Friday night he was presented with his richly deserved award by last years recipient Eleanor Shanley. A former member of the Glencar Manorhamilton club in the 1970s, he travelled from New York with his wife Helen and daughter Sharon for the occasion. Among his many achievements Frank co-authored and published in 2004 (along with the late Joe McInerney from Aughavas) “A Century of Leitrim Football in New York”. In addition to maintaining an active role with the New York club, he continues to support his native county through his involvement with the annual Leitrim Supporters Club Draw. Comhghairdeas le Proinsias. Copies of the 47th edition of the Leitrim Guardian magazine – Irelands only county journal – is available in shops now or online at leitrimguardian.ie and would make an ideal Christmas present.

Gaeltacht Scholarships 2015

Gaeltacht Scholarships 2015

Leitrim Co Board GAA is offering grants for attendance at Gaeltacht courses to Leitrim boys and girls as part of their promotion of an ghaeilge. These grants are open to registered and paid-up members of Leitrim GAA clubs, boys or girls. 

Some of the grants are part-sponsored by Gaeltacht colleges. In the case of cash grants, when students return they can claim their grant money on production of evidence of having successfully completed the course. 

Application forms can be downloaded from this link or can be had from the Secretary of any GAA club or from Seán Ó Súilleabháin, Rúnaí Cultúir agus Teanga, Béal an Átha Móir, Co Liatroma.

Sympathy

Coiste Chontae Liatroma expresses deep sympathy to the Wrynn family, Ballinamore following the death of former Leitrim Gael, Patsy Wrynn.  Patsy won a Leitrim Senior Championship with Ballinamore in 1956 during a long playing career with the club.  He was very involved with Leitrim underage teams in transporting players to training and matches and was a lifelong Leitrim supporter.  We sympathise with his son Adrian, daughters Siobhain Cullen and Sylvia ODonnell, sons in law, daughter in law and grandchildren and the Ballinamore Sean OHeslins club.

Funeral Arrangements

Reposing at his home from two o’clock until eight o’clock this evening Tuesday (11th November). Removal to St. Patrick’s Church, Ballinamore tomorrow (Wed 12th Nov) for Funeral Mass at eleven o’clock. Burial afterwards in Fenagh Abbey Cemetery.

Sympathy

Coiste Chontae Liatroma extends sincere sympathy to the wife and family of the late Sean Flanagan.  Sean was a star player with Aughawillan, Leitrim, the Leitrim club in New York and the Sean McDermott club in San Francisco.  His brothers Pat and Martin also played with Aughawillan and Leitrim and another brother Micheal is a well know club referee.  Our thoughts are with Seans wife Carol, his brothers, sisters Mary and Ellen and extended family and the Aughawillan GAA Club.

Funeral Arrangements

Reposing in the home of his brother Martin and sister-in-law Kathy Kilnacreevy, Garadice, on Tuesday (11th November) from 6pm until 10pm and on Wednesday (12th November) from 12 noon until 5pm. House private at all other times. Removal to St Patricks Church, Aughawillan, on Wednesday evening arriving at 7pm. Funeral Mass on Thursday (13th November) at 11am with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations in lieu, if so desired, to Irish Cancer Society.

Timetable for Award 1 YouthAdult Coaching Course

Leitrim GAA are running an Award 1 Youth/Adult coaching course commencing on this Friday 14th November 2014.  Timetable as outlined below:-

 

Friday 14th November from 7pm – 9.30pm in Drumshanbo Vocational School

Saturday 15th November from 10am – 1pm in Drumshanbo Vocational School

Friday 21st November from 7pm – 9.30pm in Drumshanbo Vocational School

Saturday 22nd November from 10am – 1pm – Venue TBC

Friday 28th November (Code of best practise in youth sport) from 7pm – 10pm in Drumshanbo Vocational School

Saturday 29th November from 10am – 1pm in Drumshanbo Vocational School

ALL IRELAND WHEELCHAIR HURLING INTERPROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sligo IT was the venue for the All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling Interprovincial Finals on Saturday 1st November.  The four provinces all arrived in their colours for what turned out to be a great day for both players and spectators alike. The Connacht side were looking to go one better this year – after finishing runners-up to Munster in 2013.
 
Round 1: Connacht 2 Munster 1
The first round-robinÓgame of the day threw-in with Connacht taking on  All-Ireland Champions Munster.  Five minutes into the game our Connacht midfielder Stephen Melvin scored the first goal of the day with a well hit long range strike. One minute later, Munster replied with a great goal leaving both teams level at half time. The second half started off with Connacht goalie, Liam OBoyle, making a superb save to keep Connacht in the game.  Both teams looked very even and a draw looked imminent until captain fantastic, Aidan Hynes popped up with a lovely last gasp effort to win it for Connacht. This was Connachts first ever win over Munster, a massive achievement by the hurlers in blue and white.
Round 2: Connacht 2 Ulster 2
Five minutes later, Connacht were back in action again, this time against Ulster.  And once more it was Connachts magnificient midfielder Stephen Melvin, who put us first on the score sheet. The second half began with two fast Ulster goals, but with 58 seconds remaining on the clock, Stephen Melvin scored a quality penalty, ensuring the draw for Connacht.
Round 3: Connacht 3 Leinster 0
After an hours break, Connacht were ready to roll again. They played against Leinster and the game got under way with a goal by Connacht captain Aidan Hynes.  With a  minute remaining in the first half, Connacht defender Pat Carty hit a wonder goal to the top corner from a sideline ball, leaving the Leinster goalkeeper helpless. In the second half, Stephen MelvinÓgot his fourth goal of the tournament and Connachts third of the match.  Connacht won 3-0, resulting in qualification for the A Final.  Much praise must go to the Connacht defenders and goalkeeper Liam OBoyle for keeping out a determined Leinster team.
Final: Munster 3 Connacht 2
Connacht and Munster met again in the A Final with a longer game of three 7 minute periods of duration.  In the first third, Connacht came out all guns blazing and Peter Egan was the first to score for Connacht with a great bottom corner effort.  Seconds later, Connachts Stephen Melvin scored from a Munster error, to put the Westerners two-nil up after the opening period. The tables turned in the second period with James McCarthy Scóring twice for Munster to bring the sides back level at 2-2. Munsters constant pressure in the final third paid off as captainÓger OHalloran popped up to get the winner for the Southerners, as the game ended 3-2 to Munster. However, Connacht go home with their heads held high having represented their province so brilliantly and there is no doubt that they will be back next year.
 
Eamonn Phillips is a Transition Year Student in Ballyhaunis Community School and has been working closely with the Connacht GAA Wheelchair Hurling team with coaching and PR as part of his TY Work Experience with the GAA over the past month.
