Seán Hagan steps down

Leitrim team Manager Seán Hagan informed the Executive of Leitrim GAA that he was standing down from his position as Senior team Manager. Chairperson, Joe Flynn, informed the executive at an executive meeting on Friday night specially convened to set in motion team managements for the coming year. Seán cited a number of reasons but mainly that his own business had picked up considerably in recent times a factor that would make it difficult to devote the time such a position would demand. He too expressed concern at the manner of the team’s collapse in their final game with Down in the championship qualifiers and with the commitment of some panel members leading up to this game. He said he had thought long about continuing in this role and had come to the conclusion that it would be best for Leitrim football to now move on .He wished Leitrim GAA the best of luck in the future and enjoyed his time here.

On behalf of Leitrim GAA Chairperson Joe Flynn thanked Seán for his work and enthusiasm over the past year. He alluded to his achievement in winning the FBD cup last January and of their excellent run in the National League just missing out on promotion. He stated that Seán was a gentleman to work with and always available to discuss any issues involving the team. He was passionate about the game and introduced new players to the panel with success. Injuries and the non- availability of experienced players at the end of the year made his position very difficult. Joe wished Seán the very best in both his business ventures and whatever role he would undoubtedly become involved in GAA circles. He concluded by thanking selectors Christy Carroll and Aiden Mc Carron and all involved with the management.

CLOONE GAA TO HOST “HAVE A GO DAY”

Leitrim Inclusion and Integration Committee in Conjunction with Cloone GAA Club will host the Leitrim GAA launch of the GAA initiative “Have a Go” on Sunday Aug 3rd in Pairc Naomh Mhuire Cloone starting at 1 30 pm. Have a Go Day in is an opportunity for young people to sample sports that they have not played before. On the day there will be an opportunity to play Rounders, Hurling, Camogie and of course Gaelic football for girls and boys.

The event will be attended by Mr Ger Proctor National Rounders Chairman, Mr Cyril Feehily Connacht Rounders Chairman and a team of national coaches will be in attendance to demonstrate the art of the game of rounders and provide coaching for the young people present. Coaching manuals, rule books and playing equipment will be available on the day.

Leading exponents of the other various games will be on hand to demonstrate the skills of the other games and to invite the young people to take part.

The GAA have been promoting this “Have a go day “ initiative with a view to attracting more people to the association and also providing the opportunity to young people top sample new sports that they have not have the opportunity to play on a regular basis.

As part of the initiative GAAA clubs are asked to invite all the families in the community to their sports grounds, make them feel welcome and give them the opportunity to participate in the family of GAA activities,

Leitrim GAA Inclusion and Integration officer Gerry McGovern is urging all clubs to host a” Have A Go Day” so as to give more people the opportunity to be part of the club and give new people the opportunity to sample the menu of GAA activities.

“Just because people don’t attend at GAA activities it does not mean that they are not interested, it might mean that they are not invited and maybe don’t feel welcome or that they don’t understand what is involved in the sport. By providing an opportunity like this you are giving an invitation to new people to come to the club, and to participate in the various activities. It will provide the young people of the community with the opportunity to participate in a wider range of sporting activities, get more people involved, and provide them with a social outlet locally. It can also lead to an increase in the playing population, and to an increase in membership and could provide the club with additional expertise in running its many activities.”

All GAA clubs in the County are invited to bring their underage players along to this County launch in Cloone on Sunday, and participate in the various sports on offer.

There will also be a range of other sports events taking place on the day

Proceedings start at 1 30 pm and It’s an event not to be missed.

Behind the Leitrim Banner

How frustrated our Minor and Senior players must feel this week, together with their Team Managers Enda Lyons and Sean Hagan, their selectors and backroom teams and everyone involved with the teams. Spare a thought too for the Coiste na nÓg and County Board officers who do so much un-acknowledged work in attempting to have every necessary facility provided for the team panels, as well as their busy and mundane work of administration of county and club activity.
Defeat is always a killer and God knows we are well used to it and we could fill retail units with “three cheers” and “hard luck lads”. The young Minor players feel particularly disappointed after the joy of capturing the Connacht Minor League, as most of them would also have tasted success at underage with their clubs and bitter defeat is not something they have grown up with. True, they did not play up to the form expected, but nobody could question their commitment in the build- up or on the day and we have to say Roscommon deserved their victory. We cannot allow such a talented bunch of players as these young Leitrim men to simply fade away from the inter-county scene.
Who honestly expected Leitrim to beat Down in Newry? But no blame can be apportioned to the players who took to the field there, they gave of their best against all the odds. And it must be said that Down did not attempt to do an Armagh on us, as we remember well from last year. They used their six subs, but the heart seemed to have been torn from the lads in the green and gold. Emlyn Mulligan led out a bunch of players who did not want to let the county and its supporters down and we salute Emlyn and his teammates for that.
So there’s lots of talking and debating to be done. One thing that must be done is for the supporters, sponsors, parents, families and clubs to avoid taking the easy path of criticism and to fall in behind the Leitrim banner again next year.
